Wynne can be explored from two perspectives: local history and historic commercial architecture provide a cultural focus, while Village Creek State Park adds nature and sports. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether you want to focus more on history, activities in the park, or both. These different themes give your stay a clear focus without reducing Wynne to a single attraction.

Local History and Commercial Architecture

Wynne’s history began in 1882 with a derailed freight car that was righted and designated Wynne Station. Also in 1882, the Wynne Commercial Historic District was first developed at the junction of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad line. The year therefore points to two distinct chapters: the designation of Wynne Station and the start of the commercial district’s development. The Historic District includes commercial architecture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, extending its historical scope beyond the single starting point of 1882.

Another historical feature is the Military Road Trail. It preserves an intact section of the Trail of Tears; its route is now part of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. These two aspects distinguish the preserved trail segment from its current inclusion in the named historic trail.

Museums and Regional Perspectives

The Cross County Museum is housed in the New Hope Elementary School, built in 1939. Its collections include photographs, relics, and objects that illustrate the region’s history, as well as life, conditions, events, and activities in the past and present. Its focus therefore extends beyond individual events to include living conditions and activities. The Cross County Museum and Archives’ archives are available for genealogical research.

The Cross County Veterans Museum is located next to the Veterans Monument on the west side of the Cross County Courthouse lawn. This precise description of its location helps you distinguish the museum from the Cross County Museum, which is housed in New Hope Elementary School.

Landscapes and Activities at Village Creek State Park

Village Creek State Park in Wynne encompasses nearly 7,000 acres of wooded hills and clear streams. It offers 33 miles of multi-use trails. Several interconnected trails wind through the woods of Crowley’s Ridge, and the park also offers mountain biking trails. You can also hike a section of the Trail of Tears within the trail network.

The different trail details provide distinct points of reference for planning: the 33 miles describe the extent of the multi-use trails, while the mountain biking trails and the historic section designated for hiking offer additional activity options. This lets you decide whether you’re interested in a trail network with several uses, mountain biking, or hiking a section of the Trail of Tears.

Another sporting option in the park is The Ridges at Village Creek. Designed by Andy Dye, the public 27-hole championship golf course is located on Crowley’s Ridge, a unique landform in northeastern Arkansas, in Village Creek State Park in Wynne. Golf, trails, and the landscape described here offer different experiences within the same park; the 27 holes and the design characterize the golf offering.

The Wynne Sports Complex Pond is part of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Family and Community Fishing Program. There is one specific restriction on fishing at this pond under the program: only fishing with a rod or pole is allowed. If you’re considering this fishing spot, this rule is an important distinction from the park’s trails and golf.
