History Around Morgarten and Oberägeri
The guided village tour “Valley of Homes: Oberägeri’s Residential Institutions” explores the fascinating and at times harrowing history of the sanatoriums, children’s homes and poorhouses. This topic offers a social history perspective on the village’s past, if you’re interested in Oberägeri’s history as well as its scenery and leisure activities.
Morgarten, in the municipality of Oberägeri, is considered the site of the first battle for Swiss freedom. The battle is associated with 15 November 1315 and the devastating defeat of a Habsburg army. The Morgarten experience includes a modern visitor centre that can be opened independently using an SMS code.
At Morgartenberg near Oberägeri, there is a fire pit set in impressive natural surroundings. It offers views of Chaiserstock and has been awarded the designation of an official Swiss family fire pit.
The history of the municipality of Oberägeri includes the separate institutions of the residents’ municipality and the citizens’ municipality; at the same time, the local corporation retained an important role. The citizens’ municipality of Oberägeri traces its origins to the French Revolution of 1798. In the Ägeri Valley, the municipal structure developed into separate residents’ municipalities, citizens’ municipalities and Catholic parishes; the two corporations continued to exist independently.
Sailing and Getting Your Bearings at the Lakeside
The Ägerisee Sailing School is based at the lakeside in Oberägeri and offers introductory sailing courses. Since availability and conditions may change, check them in advance. The lakeside can be reached from the Oberägeri stop by bus routes 1, 9, 10 or 34, followed by a walk of less than 15 minutes.
There is also a playground at the lakeside, with a sand area, a play ship and a climbing wall, as well as picnic facilities. Construction work is temporarily limiting its use; check the latest status before visiting.
Views and Trails in the Ägeri Valley
Gottschalkenberg is 1,186 metres above sea level and offers impressive views of the Lake Zurich region and the panorama of the Glarus Alps. Cherries have a long tradition in the region and continue to shape its landscape and local culture.
The Chriesi hike begins and ends at the Oberägeri, Grund bus stop. It leads through the gentle hills of the Ägeri Valley, past meadows, forests and traditional farmhouses. The sections of the panoramic trail are easy to reach by bus or boat, and the route offers well-equipped fire pits at regular intervals for picnics. This lets you choose between a history-focused trip, a sailing course on the lake and a range of destinations in the surrounding landscape.
