Zug between lakes, Zugerberg and culture
Accommodation in Zug
The canton of Zug combines excursions on Lake Zug and Lake Ägeri with nature on Zugerberg and cultural attractions in the city of Zug. When planning your stay, you can choose which of these different highlights to focus on: boat trips, mountain activities, museums and local traditions each offer their own inspiration for your itinerary.
Scenery and activities on Zugerberg
The canton of Zug is home to four moorland landscapes of exceptional beauty and national importance, which are protected by the constitution. These include the Zugerberg moorland landscape. Viewpoints in the canton offer panoramic views of Lake Zug, Lake Ägeri, the Alps and the gentle hills of Central Switzerland.
Zugerberg is 1,093 metres high and offers views of Lake Zug. Activities there include hiking, mountain biking and snowshoeing. The funicular takes you up the mountain in eight minutes. The range of activities lets you choose between enjoying the views while getting active on the mountain, longer routes and mountain biking, each with its own character.
The 2.1-kilometre Zugerberg mountain bike trail runs from the Zugerberg mountain station via Juchenegg to Schönegg, the valley station of the Zugerberg railway. It is rated easy to intermediate, and there are bypasses for all obstacles. These details apply to the trail and help distinguish it from the other activities on Zugerberg.
Boat trips, lakeside path and attractions
Lake Zug cruises offer scenic trips, sunset cruises, culinary experiences, family trips and music cruises. Boats operate daily from mid-April to early November; check the season dates before you travel. Along the shore, the Lake Zug lakeside path links urban quays with quiet stretches through woods and fields, and offers views of the lake.
On Lake Ägeri, a boat trip offers families a different kind of outing: on the knight’s cruise, the journey itself becomes an adventure. The lake lies nestled among wooded hills. The two lakes therefore offer different scenery and boating experiences; the operating period mentioned applies to Lake Zug cruises.
The Höllgrotten caves are located in the Lorzentobel gorge and are an excursion destination for families, school classes, groups and individual visitors. They are open from April to October. If you would like to include the caves in your itinerary, check the seasonal opening hours before your visit.
Museums and history in the city of Zug
At the Museum of Prehistory(n) Zug, the permanent collection focuses in part on the pile-dwelling period; visitors can see artefacts from three UNESCO World Heritage sites. The permanent exhibition also presents archaeological finds from the canton of Zug, dating from the Palaeolithic to the Early Middle Ages. In the open workshop, visitors can make a souvenir independently, inspired by Neolithic finds.
The Burg Zug Museum’s permanent exhibition explores the history of the city and canton of Zug from the Middle Ages onwards. The rambling building on the edge of Zug’s Old Town is the city’s oldest surviving secular building and has a history spanning almost 900 years. Families can follow digital or traditional treasure trails through the museum.
The Kunsthaus Zug collection comprises around 10,000 works of art. It is presented in themed temporary exhibitions at Kunsthaus Zug and in the Schaudepot at KunstCluster Zug. In the city, archaeological and historical themes are thus complemented by changing art exhibitions.
Cherries and Zug traditions
During a tour of Confiserie Speck, a cake is made in front of visitors. Afterwards, they can enjoy a slice of cherry cake and a coffee at the café next door. The cherry cake tour takes visitors into the bakery and shares insights into authentic Zug cherry cake.
At the Zug Chriesimärt, many cherry growers offer Zug kirsch, cherry cakes, cherry sausages and other regional delicacies alongside fresh cherries. The Chriesisturm has been held since 2009 as a race through Zug’s Old Town. Both offer a glimpse into the local cherry tradition: one through market produce, the other through a race in the Old Town.
