Neuheim: Morainic Hills, Churches and the History of Technology
Accommodation in Neuheim
Neuheim lies in a moraine landscape between the Lorze and the Sihl. The village is situated on a terrace amid rolling hills. The moraine hills between Menzingen, Neuheim and Hirzel are protected at national level. This landscape provides the setting for a stay where visitors can discover nature, local history and a range of leisure destinations.
Churches and Local History
Neuheim already had its first church in 1173. Its old tower was incorporated into the present-day parish church, which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary in 1666. For a long time, the church was a Marian pilgrimage site and attracted pilgrims. The combination of the old tower and the present-day parish church makes part of this long history visible in the building itself.
Other religious buildings also shape the local history: the cemetery chapel, the St. Joseph and Mary ossuary, and St. Wendelin Chapel are listed as protected monuments in the Canton of Zug. The foundations of St. Wendelin Chapel probably date back to the 15th century. It stands on an old route that led from the crossing over the Sihl (Babenwag/Sihl Bridge), via the Gubel, to the Ägeri Valley. Its Renaissance altarpiece depicts the Virgin Mary between St. Wendelin and St. Notburga.
Another historical landmark is the Old Falcon. It is considered evidence of Neuheim’s period of expansion during the silk-weaving industry of the 19th century. The local history thus encompasses both religious buildings and traces of Neuheim’s development during a later economic period.
The History of Technology at Zug Depot
The Zug Depot of the History of Technology at Sihlbruggstrasse 51 presents the military, technological, transport, fire service and industrial history of the Canton of Zug. Its varied themes make the depot a destination for anyone interested in technological developments and their significance for the canton.
One example from transport history is the Orion: from 1904 to 1913, it carried passengers from Zug via Baar to Menzingen. The Orion is still operational, although whether the vehicle will be on display during your visit may vary. Tours can be booked from April to October. The depot also opens its doors twice a year. Check the current dates and booking options before planning your visit.
The depot can be reached on foot, by bicycle, by public transport or by car. Its address is Sihlbruggstrasse 51 in Neuheim; parking is available on site. As parking arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current situation before travelling.
Views, Trails and Playgrounds
From the Josef Gütsch viewpoint, the view stretches across the gentle hills of the Zug region to the Alpine chain. The viewpoint is a short walk of around 15 minutes from the Neuheim Dorf bus stop. If travelling by car, use the Lindenhalle car park; check the current parking situation in advance here as well.
A circular hiking trail runs above Josefsgütsch. There is a small playground along the trail, with a swing for young children. Adults can enjoy the view while the children play. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the playground with views of the surrounding area, without having to undertake a longer hike.
Chilemattt playground has features for climbing, balancing, swinging and sliding. Facilities include a sandbox, a climbing tower, swings and slides. A nearby shelter makes it possible to visit even in wet weather. For a different kind of shared leisure, there is the Begegnungsplatz gathering place: its newly redesigned, partially covered area has seating and a fireplace, and visitors can also play boccia.
Location and Getting There
The village of Neuheim is away from through traffic. Zug, Lucerne and Zurich are easily reached thanks to its convenient location. Neuheim therefore offers its own distinctive character in a hilly landscape, while also providing a location from which all three cities can be reached quickly. The local history, the technology depot and the viewpoints offer different highlights to consider when choosing where to stay.
