Romainmôtier is a locality in the municipality of Romainmôtier-Envy in the canton of Vaud. It lies at an elevation of around 674 metres above sea level in the narrow valley floor of the Nozon stream, where it emerges from the Jura. Historical heritage, cultural events and trails of varying lengths give visitors several possible ways to shape their stay. You can plan your trip around the balance you want between sightseeing, culture and activity.

Abbey Church and Historical Heritage

The Romainmôtier Abbey Church was the first Cluniac priory in Swiss territory. It was built between 990 and 1028 based on the plans for the church at Cluny. Guided tours of the abbey church are available on request. The Maison du Prieur is open to visitors and hosts cultural and gastronomic events. The Porterie offers three themed areas: the Cluniac abbey church, the Vallon du Nozon and the park. It also provides information about guided tours and upcoming concerts. As visitor services may change, it is advisable to check visiting options before your visit.

Walks and Hikes

The trails vary in both length and theme. The 1.5 km walk following in the footsteps of artist Pierre Aubert passes through Romainmôtier’s cultural and natural highlights. The Belvédère de Forel can be reached on a 3 km walk and offers an impressive view of Romainmôtier. The Circuit des fontaines is a 9 km hike starting in Romainmôtier. The 13 km Sentier du patrimoine de Romainmôtier invites you on a hike through preserved nature and historical heritage. The 1.5 km and 3 km trails are shorter than the two hikes of 9 km and 13 km; their themes also range from the artist and the viewpoint to fountains and heritage. The Gorges du Nozon, with the Cascade du Dard, are also close to Romainmôtier.

Concerts and Recurring Events

Over 55 seasons, Les Concerts de Romainmôtier has presented more than 750 concerts, mainly in the abbey church and occasionally in the Maison du Prieur. Recurring events also include the Fête de la Rose, organised every year by the Société de développement de Romainmôtier-Envy, and the Marché Artisanal, which it holds every two years. The two festivals therefore take place at different intervals.
