Ballaigues lies on the southern slope of Suchet, on the French-Swiss border; the municipality includes the village and several hamlets. Archaeological tracks, local history and hikes shape the themes of a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Ballaigues, you can consider when planning whether a historical circuit or a longer hike should shape your stay.

Archaeological tracks west of the village

West of the village is a roughly 200-metre-long section of wheel ruts, considered the longest visible example of its kind in Switzerland. It is also a rare example of such a feature on level ground. The ruts are up to 40 centimetres deep. The tracks are probably connected with salt routes from the Middle Ages and the Ancien Régime. This striking feature in the ground is paired with a cautiously worded historical interpretation: the possible connection to former salt routes gives visitors a specific reason to explore these two periods.

Local history on the Parcours Belle Epoque

The Parcours Belle Epoque is a four-kilometre circular route through Ballaigues and takes about 1.5 hours on foot. Eleven stations explain the history of the municipality in detail. The start and finish are at Place du Château, in front of the Hôtel-Restaurant de la Croix d’Or. The distance and approximate walking time help you gauge the route; its focus is local history.

Ballaigues was first mentioned in 1228 under the historical form “Balevui” and was also referred to as “Bella Aqua” in 1453. These two forms mark early dates in the town’s history and add to the story of the municipality explored at the Parcours’ eleven stations.

Hikes with different focuses

The Sentier thématique de la Jougnena connects Jougne, Ballaigues and Vallorbe. The route is about 19 kilometres long and takes around five hours on foot. Its nine themed sections trace almost 2,000 years of the history of the Jougnena Valley, from Roman times to the present day. The route thus spans a long period and takes in three places.

The Tour des chalets hike starts in Ballaigues and leads visitors to discover the heritage of the northern Vaud Jura. It passes through forests and pastures and offers views of Dent de Vaulion and Mont d’Or. This hike therefore foregrounds the interplay between landscape and heritage, while the Parcours Belle Epoque explains the municipality’s history at its stations.

For planning your time, the difference between the two routes with stated walking times is clear: the Parcours Belle Epoque takes about 1.5 hours, while the Sentier thématique de la Jougnena takes around five hours on foot. They also have different thematic focuses: local history on the circular route, and the history of the Jougnena Valley on the longer themed hike.

Practical planning

For the Les Gorges de l’Orbe hike, one parking option is in the village centre of Ballaigues. Check current parking conditions before you travel. This allows you to take this planning detail into account without confusing it with the choice of hiking route.
