La Praz is considered a small village at the foot of the Jura. The municipal area extends across the gentle slope of the Jura balcony and covers 512 hectares, 210 hectares of which are forest. Its south-easterly orientation provides particularly generous sunshine. The sloping terrain offers views of the Gros-de-Vaud, Lake Geneva and the Alps.

Landscape and trails

Forest, hillside location and far-reaching views define different aspects of the municipal area. When walking in the forest, stay on the paths and follow the recommended routes. The Cromlech of La Praz is located beside a footpath; this prehistoric site is also an example of the cultural heritage you can discover in the area.

Church and archaeological evidence

The Reformed church on Place du Temple is protected as a historic monument; this protection has been in place since 10 June 1960. The church has interesting stained-glass windows. The building plans and cost estimates for the temple offer another historical connection: they bear the signature of the architect Perregaux and date from 1840 to 1842.

A prehistoric megalithic complex in La Praz is designated as protected cultural heritage. The Cromlech of La Praz consists of five blue-green rhyolite blocks arranged in a circle and connected by smaller stones. It was excavated in the 19th century and designated a historic monument in 1900. It can be seen in the forest southwest of the village. South of the village, at La Chapelle, remains of Roman buildings, tuff-stone tombs and ancient weapons were also unearthed.

A cycling tour with a climb to the village

The Chalet Dernier circular cycling route runs from RomainmĂ´tier via La Praz and Juriens to Chalet Dernier; the return route goes via Juriens to RomainmĂ´tier. The approach to La Praz passes through the Bois de la Sapelle and the Champs Cocard. A steep ramp then leads to the village centre. If you are planning the circuit, check the route conditions before setting off.

Cheese and cultural events

Fromagerie La Praz lists fondue, Prazette (raclette cheese), Gruyère and Délice du Nozon among its products. Check availability before visiting. Gruyère AOP from La Praz is also associated with a specific competition result: it received a silver medal at the Swiss Cheese Awards 2024.

A municipal profile from 2018 names S’OccuPraz as a cultural society that held concert-cabaret evenings with meals in the Grande salle two to three times a year. If an evening like this is a deciding factor for your trip, check the current organisers and dates.

Planning bus connections

For guidance on travelling by bus, the MBC route 750 from Cossonay-Penthalaz station to Mont-la-Ville and route 684 between Vallorbe and La Praz are relevant. Check the current timetable before travelling.
