Culture and History

The parish church of Zeneggen was built from 1877 to 1881 on the site of the former Chapel of the Holy Trinity in the neo-Romanesque style. It has a five-tone carillon, which is played before Mass on Saturdays or Sundays.

Biel Chapel is still occasionally used for services on certain holidays and for weddings. Inside is a historic organ of national importance, built in 1820 by Swiss organ builder Carlen and restored by FĂĽglister in 1983. The foundation stone for Biel Chapel was laid in 1818; the main part was completed around 1819.

The Kasteltschuggen ridge is another place where landscape and history meet: The wooded rocky ridge west of Zeneggen rises to around 1,600 metres and is bordered by rock faces to the south and east. The prehistoric settlement site on Kasteltschuggen is one of the most important archaeological sites of early history in Valais. Near the hamlet of Sisetsch, inhabitants of the Early Bronze Age left behind cup-marked stones; one example is located about 200 metres north of the last bend before the hamlet.

In summer, «Zeneggu erläbe» organises several events and activities where visitors can get to know the village and its traditions.

Nature in the Village and on the Mountain Pastures

The unimproved meadows in the village and the Hellela and Diebje mountain pastures are home to alpine flowers and various butterflies. June and July are considered the best time for butterfly watching. Zeneggen also has a species-rich population of songbirds, including woodlarks, rock buntings, red-backed shrikes, wrynecks and yellowhammers.

Suitable observation sites for songbirds include Riebenäcker, Ze Bifigu, Lochäcker, Widum and Sisetsch. Nature observations are therefore possible not only in the open meadows but also at several named locations around the districts and hamlets.

Hiking, Cycling and Winter Trails

The hiking guide for Zeneggen lists six hikes with walking times ranging from 1 hour to 5 hours. The «Bodme – Alt-Zeneggen – Rohr – Biel Chapel» hike is listed with a walking time of 1 hour. In addition, the «Augstbordli» team has created an educational trail for beginners.

For cycling, the Hellela Family Loop starts and ends in Zeneggen at an altitude of 1,367 metres. The moderately difficult all-mountain family tour is 6.43 kilometres long and leads along easy trail sections and gravel roads. The Moosalp Plateau Bike route reaches Zeneggen after passing through the hamlet of Burgen.

The Zeneggen–Stand snowshoe trail starts at the «Magusii» grocery shop in Zeneggen and ends at the Stand viewpoint. Outdoor activities in Zeneggen also include cross-country ski tracks and snowshoe trails. In the Zeneggen area and throughout the Moosalp region, there are numerous geocaching trails and various types of caches.

Play, Sports and Exercise

The climbing garden below Zeneggen at Helbrigackern comprises three sectors with routes of varying difficulty. It can be reached by PostBus to the Klettergarte stop or by car; parking spaces are available on the Visp–Zeneggen road.

The recreational area around the pond used for firefighting in Zeneggen has a fire pit, a fountain, a table with a sun canopy, an open sandbox by the lake, a climbing frame and a bocce court. The Zeneggen forest playground is surrounded by nature and offers numerous play opportunities. The Zeneggen Dorf playground is idyllically situated below the church and has swings, an Indian tipi playhouse with a slide, climbing elements and a trampoline set flush with the ground.

The hamlet of Zen Stadeln is home to a tennis facility with two clay courts in the «French Court» style, a practice wall, floodlights and a changing room with showers. In addition to trails and playgrounds, the village area therefore also offers facilities for climbing and tennis.
