Stalden lies at an altitude of 800 m at the entrance to the Saas and Matter valleys, where the two valleys meet. The municipality stretches from the valley floor up the slopes and is surrounded by steep mountains, forests and streams. In clear weather, the view from the village hill «Biel» extends across the entire Visp Valley; visibility depends on the weather. Stalden is known as a starting point for hiking and biking tours in the region, and its natural surroundings are considered suitable for walks and excursions.

Hiking trails between the village and mountain scenery

All three circular trails in Stalden can be reached by train and bus, and pass public transport stops several times along the way. Check local operating conditions before you travel. The Bridge Trail starts at Stalden railway station, leads through the village via Tiechelweg and Stale, and crosses the Mattervispa on the Merju Bridge. On the return leg, it crosses the restored ChibrĂĽcke to the village side; the trail ends back at the station.

The Water Channel Trail climbs near the hamlet of Liechtbiel to the Äbibärgeri water channel. It has been professionally restored and is partly open. The trail passes close to a Swiss Family barbecue site and is considered ideal for family hikes. Seasonal restrictions may apply to the barbecue site. The High Trail passes St. Michael’s Church and offers a view into the gorge where the Mattervispa and Saaservispa converge. Local rules may apply to visits inside the church. The trails offer different highlights: the village route and bridges on the Bridge Trail, the water channel on the Water Channel Trail, or the gorge view on the High Trail.

Bridges and architectural history

Because it has so many bridges in a small area, Stalden is also known as «the village of bridges». Chibrücke dates from 1544 and was built by master builder Ulrich Ruffiner. The Neubrück-Saumtiel Bridge, built in 1599, spans the deeply cut Vispa in a single wide arch. The two bridges therefore illustrate different construction styles and belong to different periods in the village’s history.

The well-preserved historic settlement centre near the church stands out clearly from the rocky, undeveloped surroundings and the village’s more recent development phases. The parish church of St. Michael, dedicated to the Archangel Michael, is Baroque, was built in 1777 and is considered the oldest church in the Visp Valley still used as a church today. The ensemble known as the Meierhaus consists of three houses and a residential tower. The residential tower, attributed to the de Asper family, is its oldest part; dendrochronological studies date it to 1293/1294.

Chapels and pilgrimage

Kastelegge Chapel stands on a scenic promontory about halfway between the hamlets of Mülackern and Riedji. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. The parish holds a pilgrimage there every October; the exact date and arrangements may change. Please check these details before your visit. The described route by car goes via Neubrück and the hamlet of «Alte Scheune», followed by a further stretch of around 400 m in the direction of Staldenried. From there, a footpath follows the Stations of the Cross to the chapel.

Another chapel stands in the hamlet of Neubrück on the right bank of the Vispe, by an arched bridge built in 1599. It is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Together with the parish church of St. Michael and the pilgrimage to Kastelegge, the chapels offer different points of interest for visitors interested in the village’s religious history.

Museum and village history

The postman8 - Museum is located in Stalden’s historic village centre. Housed in a historic storehouse, it presents a varied exhibition about everyday life in earlier times in an area of 6 × 6 m. Check the opening arrangements before your visit. A trail in Stalden uses 20 information panels and QR codes to tell visitors about the sights and the village’s history. On the ground floor, the «Wohnung Andres» houses a venue owned by the «Alt Stalu» association for cultural exhibitions and events; the programme may change.

If you are looking for accommodation in Stalden, the hiking trails, bridges and historic sites offer different themes to help you choose your destination. You can tailor your stay to your interests in scenery, outdoor activities or village history.
