Accommodation in Saas-Fee
Saas-Fee is set in a unique mountain landscape. The Allalin excursion destination is located above the village, surrounded by four-thousand-metre peaks. Places to visit include glaciers, marmots, themed trails and attractions devoted to the history of the Saas Valley. The destinations vary in altitude, how to get there and what they offer – useful guidance when planning your days in Saas-Fee.
Allalin, Längfluh and glacier lakes
You can reach the highlights of the Allalin excursion destination by taking the Metro Alpin. At 3,500 metres, the destination includes a revolving restaurant. Mittelallalin also offers a virtual glacier experience, likewise at 3,500 metres. This high-altitude destination combines a restaurant with a digital experience centred on glaciers.
At Längfluh, you can get particularly close to the glaciers; it lies at 2,869 metres. From Saas-Fee, you can reach Längfluh by cable car in about 20 minutes. From the mountain station, it takes about 15 minutes to walk to the glacier lakes. The two times refer to different sections: the cable-car journey from the village and the walk from the station.
Marmots, mountain weather and alpine trails
The Spielboden viewpoint is at 2,488 metres and can be reached from Saas-Fee by cable car in eight minutes. Marmots live there, and you can see them at close range. The Murmeliweg trail shares fascinating facts about the animals. Observation and learning go hand in hand here: you can see the marmots and learn more about them along the themed trail.
Another themed trail is called “Eddie and the Mountain Weather”. Eight interactive stations explore weather phenomena such as snow, wind and permafrost. The Saas-Fee ski area reaches an altitude of 3,600 metres. Near Hannig, a route through alpine terrain features flowing sections, natural trails and trail sections. These routes each focus on different mountain themes – weather, winter sports and the terrain of an alpine route.
For a glacier experience on the Fee Glacier, the seasonal glacier adventure tour starts at the Längfluh station. Secured to a mountain guide’s rope, you head out onto the glacier; the equipment includes crampons and a climbing harness. Check before your trip whether the tour is available during your stay.
Saas Valley history and practical information
The Saas Museum is housed in the former rectory in Saas-Fee, built in 1732. Modernised rooms and interactive experiences explore the history of the Saas Valley. One section covers the significance of cable cars in the region’s tourism history. A visit to the museum therefore complements mountain excursions with a cultural and historical perspective.
The SaastalCard is also useful when planning your cable-car trips. From your first overnight stay, it provides free use of the cable cars in the Saas Valley during your stay, except for the Metro Alpin, as well as the PostBus in the Saas Valley. The exception is important for trips to Allalin, whose highlights you can reach by taking the Metro Alpin.
Visitor information for Saas-Fee covers cable cars, open hiking trails, bike trails and leisure facilities. Use this information to help plan your day. Depending on whether you focus on a viewpoint, a themed trail, a glacier route or the museum, your stay can take on a different focus.
