Törbel offers several distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: historic everyday culture, water-powered technology and landscapes stretching from the municipality to Moosalp. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Törbel, these themes can help you organise your interests for your stay. This way, you can get to know the area from different perspectives instead of limiting your plans to a single activity.

Historic Buildings and Crafts

The Urchigs Terbil Museum comprises eight buildings that reflect different aspects of everyday life in a former Valais mountain village. Visitors can explore the interiors of the historic buildings on guided tours. The facilities along the Törbelbach stream can also be seen in operation during demonstrations; the Gattersäge sawmill can likewise be viewed in operation as part of a guided tour. A visit thus takes you through different forms of work and technology from the past.

One example is the Driel, a Valais wine press. It is the last of the four wine presses originally found in Törbel and was built in 1864 by 28 co-owners for communal use. The Driel can be visited as part of a guided tour of Urchigs Terbil. The combination of a preserved structure, its communal purpose and its function as a wine press gives visitors a tangible insight into local history.

The mill on the Törbelbach stream also tells the story of how hydropower was used. It is the last of the five mills originally found here; all were privately operated. As a stock mill, it works with a horizontal wheel powered by water to turn the runner stone. At the fulling mill, a camshaft driven by a waterwheel lifted the hammers used to process rolls of Drilch fabric. The mill and the fulling mill illustrate different work processes that both used water for power.

Törbel’s cultural heritage also includes buildings and customs on a smaller scale. In the hamlet of Zenblatten stands the St Ignatius Chapel, built by Ignaz Seematter at the beginning of the 19th century. The altarpiece depicts Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Also in Zenblatten is Z’Chlei Stadelti, a little way from the village of Törbel. This typical Valais barn was used to thresh and store rye. Stone slabs on the supporting posts were intended to keep rodents away from the supplies. Every year before Christmas, a group of young men bakes bread in the bakehouse following an old tradition.

Moors, Views and Trails on Moosalp

The landscape offers another perspective for planning a trip. Several fens and the exceptional Bonigersee raised bog lie above Törbel. The area on Moosalp covers 1.5 km² and contains eleven different peatland habitats. Changes in elevation also shape the landscape: the municipality extends from 770 metres to the 2,972-metre summit of Augstbordhorn. Moosalp lies at 2,042 metres, is the alpine pasture of the municipality of Törbel and is used as a tourist area.

From Törbel, there are views of the mountains, valleys and villages in every direction. On the Moosalp plateau, the Moosalp Panorama Trail offers views of Upper Valais and twelve peaks over 4,000 metres high. Those interested in water can find another perspective on the “Scenes Along the Water Trail” themed route: it leads from Moosalp to Visp and provides information about water from its source to the Rhône.

For mountain biking travellers, the Törbel Loop is an easy circular route from Törbel to Moosalp and back to Törbel via Alp Pletsche. Various hiking trails and ski runs are also accessible from Moosalp. These include the Z’Nivu PostBus stop and a ski lift with direct access to the Bürchen-Moosalp ski area. The activities differ in both subject and mode of travel; choose the focus that suits your trip when planning your stay.

Plan Your Journey

The Törbel–Moosalp route runs from Stalden first to Törbel and then on to Moosalp. Törbel can be reached from Visp by public transport in about 30 minutes. Check the timetable for your travel date. Whether you would mainly like to explore historic buildings and technical details or focus on the landscape and trails, these themes provide a practical starting point for planning your stay in Törbel.
