Vollèges lies on a north-facing slope at the entrance to the Val de Bagnes, about six kilometres east of Martigny. The surrounding area is shaped by mountain landscapes, wooded pastures and evidence of a long history. Different perspectives can help you plan your trip: trails at Col du Lein and Col des Planches, the architecture of Église Saint-Martin and local culinary traditions. Depending on whether you mainly want to explore the outdoors or learn about architectural history and regional produce, you can focus your stay in different ways.

Mountain Landscapes and Trails

Near Vollèges, wooded pastures extend over 220 hectares between the alpine pastures of Lein, Tronc, Planches and Bioley. Above Vollèges, the wooded pastures on Mont Chemin cover 680 hectares. These figures refer to different areas and together give an impression of the breadth of this landscape. A striking viewpoint is La Crevasse: the summit is at an altitude of 1,807 metres and offers hikers a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding mountain landscape.

The Chemin du Bicentenaire is an easy educational hike through wooded pastures and forests. Its 34 fun activity stations explore local fauna, flora and geography, with the larch taking centre stage. The trail starts near Étang du Goilly at Col du Lein. The starting point for the Sentier des Mines, by contrast, is at Col des Planches. This educational trail on Mont Chemin brings together cultural heritage, nature and geology. A visitor reception and exhibition area at the starting point showcases the natural and mineral diversity of Mont Chemin. As visitor information includes seasonal details, check the arrangements before setting out.

The two trails have different focuses: the Chemin du Bicentenaire centres on its fun activity stations and the larch, while the Sentier des Mines brings together themes of cultural heritage, nature and geology. Their starting points are also different. So when planning your hikes, it helps to consider the starts at Col du Lein and Col des Planches separately.

Church History and Architecture

The remains of two earlier churches were discovered beneath Église Saint-Martin in Vollèges. One visible link to the building’s history is the bell tower of the former Gothic church: it has been fully preserved and incorporated into today’s Baroque Église Saint-Martin. The parish church is a historic monument protected by the Canton of Valais; its inventory entry is dated 10 March 2021.

The area’s history reaches back a long way, too. Vollèges is documented as a parish from at least 1178 and has historic connections with the Abbey of Saint-Maurice and the Lordship of Entremont. Several periods of history come together at Église Saint-Martin: the remains of earlier churches, the tower of the Gothic predecessor and today’s Baroque church. Those interested in historic architecture will find a concrete point of reference here for understanding the area’s development across different eras.

Regional Produce and Traditions

The Four banal et ateliers des terroirs includes a communal oven dating from 1905, built of molasse. The regional culinary tradition preserves recipes for Fratzes sausages, Cressin and sauerkraut, among other dishes. The oven and the recipes passed down through generations represent different aspects of this tradition: communal baking and the passing on of culinary knowledge.

At Fromagerie d’Etiez, milk from local producers is made into cheese and tommes. The products for sale include Raclette de Bagnes 98 AOP and Tomme La Vollégearde. The history of agriculture provides another point of context: winegrowing in Vollèges is documented from 1560, and agriculture was the main source of income until the 20th century.

Bees and beekeeping are also among the local topics. The Centre de Compétences en Apiculture opened in May 2024. It is dedicated to bees and beekeeping, also serves to raise public awareness, and is surrounded by a garden with beehives.
