Le Châble: Cultural History, Cycling and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Le Châble
Le Châble offers a range of starting points for planning your trip: historic buildings and a themed museum exhibition, cycling options, and walking and hiking routes. If you’re looking for hotels in Le Châble, you can start by choosing based on the activities that matter to you during your stay. The places and routes below vary in focus, length and access, and provide practical guidance for planning your trip.
Cultural history in historic buildings
The Musée de Bagnes is located in a former presbytery near the parish church. The building was renovated in 1984 and converted into an exhibition venue; parts of its walls date back to the early 13th century. Features include a 1627 mural of the Crucifixion, paneled rooms with molded ceilings from the 16th and 17th centuries, a painted ceiling from the early 18th century, and numerous soapstone stoves. The building and its interiors bring together several historical periods in one place.
The Musée de Bagnes presents an annual themed exhibition, accompanied by a publication. For planning your visit, it is also important to know that the museum is not wheelchair accessible. Handwritten transcripts of the audio recordings are available at reception.
The Abbaye Maurice Chappaz is also a historic monument in Le Châble. Built in 1646, it initially served as the residence of the abbots of Saint-Maurice; the writer Maurice Chappaz also lived there. The Forge Oreiller has a different building history: Jean-François Pantalon Oreiller converted it into a bell foundry in the early 19th century. Two waterwheels ventilate five furnaces, and the preserved machinery still works. The parish church of Saint Maurice de Bagnes in Le Châble dates from the early 16th century.
Cycling options and routes
The Le Châble–La Tzoumaz gravel route starts at the railway station and is 27.34 kilometers long; it is rated as intermediate. Another route runs between Le Châble and Verbier: it is 8.4 kilometers long and is one-way. Check current route conditions before setting out.
There are also two different BMX facilities in the village. The paved Espace St-Marc pump track is designed specifically for children and beginners, and is just a few minutes’ walk from the railway station and the gondola to Verbier. The Gouille à Vaudan park is a BMX freestyle facility with various lines for everyone from beginners to experts. This gives you a choice between a pump track, a freestyle facility and designated cycling routes.
Walks and excursions in nature
The Croix de Cœur par la Planie walk can be reached from Le Châble by mountain lifts as far as Les Ruinettes. Every summer, the Musée de Bagnes puts on an outdoor photography exhibition there. The route combines physical activity with a seasonal cultural exhibition.
The Sentier des Chamois runs through the Haut Val de Bagnes nature reserve and offers opportunities to observe wildlife. The route can be reached by regular train services to Le Châble, changing in Martigny, and by gondola from Le Châble via Verbier to La Chaux.
Another option is Les Secrets du val de Bagnes, a 25-kilometer circular route that you can cover on foot or by bicycle. Illustrated with photographs, the route explores local knowledge about trees, medicinal plants, cup-marked stones and distilling. These topics give the route a different focus from the wildlife observation offered by the Sentier des Chamois.
