Verbier: Mountains, Winter Sports and Culture
Accommodation in Verbier
Verbier Between Mountains and Winter Sports
Verbier Village lies at an altitude of 1,400 metres in the Swiss canton of Valais and is part of the municipality of Val de Bagnes. Verbier combines winter sports, mountain scenery, summer trails and culture. For planning your trip, the seasonal focus is a useful starting point: skiing and freeriding are complemented by hiking, mountain bike trails and the annual Verbier Festival. If you’re looking for a hotel in Verbier, first consider which of these activities will shape your stay; you can then plan your travel dates accordingly.
Verbier’s ski sector offers runs between 1,500 and 2,700 metres in altitude. The 4 Vallées ski area comprises 410 kilometres of pistes, 80 mountain lifts and eight freeride routes; these figures may change as the network is planned. Mont-Fort rises even higher: at over 3,300 metres, it offers a 360-degree panorama of major Alpine peaks. Access to Mont-Fort depends on the season and weather; ski area operations also vary seasonally. Check seasonal access to the summit before your visit.
Summer Trails, Views and Mountain Biking
The summer trails near Verbier pass through forests, alpine pastures and alpine landscapes, offering views of Val de Bagnes. More than 500 kilometres of marked trails cross Verbier, Val de Bagnes and La Tzoumaz. Trail conditions and possible closures depend on the season. The varied landscapes and views of Val de Bagnes give the trails their distinctive character.
One particular viewpoint is Pierre Avoi, at an altitude of 2,473 metres. It can be reached from the Croix-de-Cœur car park or from Savoleyres; the route via Savoleyres includes a gondola ride from Verbier. Access depends on mountain conditions and lift operations. You can choose between the two stated starting points for this viewpoint and take the relevant access conditions into account when planning your visit.
The Verbier Bike Park has nine downhill trails covering a total of 19 kilometres, equipped with ramps and jumps. The trails range from beginner level to courses used in international competitions. Trail availability depends on the season; difficulty classifications may change over time. The range therefore offers different levels of challenge, and not all trails are of the same difficulty.
Culture and Activities in Verbier
The Verbier Festival is an internationally renowned classical music festival. Martin Engstroem founded it in 1994, and it takes place every summer in Verbier. Concerts are held mainly in the Salle des Combins and the Église de Verbier, with other musical events also taking place elsewhere in the resort. Dates and programmes vary with each edition. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the details for the relevant edition.
The Verbier 3-D Foundation Sculpture Park, a free open-air museum, stretches between Les Ruinettes and La Chaux. Its outdoor collection evolves over time. Visitors can explore the park on foot, on skis or using the mountain lift network; lift access depends on the season. Unlike the concert venues, the park combines art with time spent outdoors.
The Chapelle du Hameau de Verbier is part of the area’s architectural history. This private, ecumenical chapel is dedicated to All Saints and was designed in 1990 by architect Pierre Dorsaz. Its private status is part of its description.
The Parc de Loisirs is an outdoor recreation park in the centre of Verbier. Activities include 18-hole mini golf, trampolines, a climbing wall, tennis, pétanque and table tennis. The Parcours des Moulins is also open to beginners without a licence.
At Les Ruinettes, TakiTrek offers a five-kilometre panoramic toboggan ride between Les Ruinettes and La Chaux. Verbier also has a designated sledging area with a free conveyor belt to the top of the slope. Paragliding flights also take off from Les Ruinettes, at an altitude of 2,200 metres, with the Alps as a backdrop.
