Ligornetto is a district of Mendrisio in the Mendrisio District of the Canton of Ticino. The town lies at the foot of Monte San Giorgio, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003. Art, historic architecture and gardens offer different points of interest: the Museo Vincenzo Vela, the parish church of San Lorenzo Martire and works in the town centre invite you to discover Ligornetto from different perspectives. You can plan your visit around your interest in artists’ houses, sacred art or a stroll through the museum park.

Museo Vincenzo Vela and its park

The Museo Vincenzo Vela is one of the most important European artists’ houses of the 19th century. It preserves Vincenzo Vela’s monumental plaster cast collection, as well as the estates of the sculptor Lorenzo Vela and the painter Spartaco Vela. The collection thus brings together monumental plaster works and the legacies of two other artists. The museum park is also worth a visit: a stroll takes you through an Italian formal garden and an English landscape garden. Citrus cultivation and small displays of ornamental plants are also features of the park. The park also hosts exhibitions of contemporary art.

From Mendrisio railway station, take the PostBus to Ligornetto Posta. From there, the Museo Vincenzo Vela is a five-minute walk away. Check the public transport timetable before travelling.

Churches and historic townscapes

The parish church of San Lorenzo Martire is in the historic town centre; it is mentioned in historical documents in 1209. Inside, the illusionistic paintings on the dome above the choir shape the space. Cipriano Pelli from Aranno created these paintings in 1777. Traces of the town’s rural past can also be seen outside the church: the surviving farmhouses in the town centre include some buildings with portals made of Saltrio stone; there are also columned courtyards dating from the 15th century.

The Cappella di S. Giuseppe is also known as Madonna della Cerva. A religious building at this site is documented as far back as 844; a small temple to Mercury may once have stood here. Casa Pessina has a different story: the heirs of the sculptor and painter Apollonio Pessina donated the house to the municipality of Ligornetto. After renovations, it became a cultural centre. It comprises four rooms with important works by Pessina and is open only during temporary exhibitions. Before your visit, check whether such an exhibition is taking place during your stay.

Works of art around town

Several public artworks complement the churches and museum, offering a closer look at local art history. Vincenzo Vela’s tomb monument is located in the Cimitero Ligornetto cemetery. Designed in 1893, this richly decorated artists’ tomb includes a reclining statue, a copy of the Ecce Homo and a trophy motif with Masonic references.

At the Pesa pubblica Ligornetto, Vincenzo Vela’s sandstone statue La Giustizia from 1855 stands on a hexagonal plinth. Scales and sword are its traditional attributes. The former use of the Fontana–Lavatoio Ligornetto as a washhouse evokes another chapter in the town’s history; the fountain is decorated with a stone sculpture of a dog by Lorenzo Vela. Another fountain stands at the site of the former first municipal office. It is topped by a stone mask depicting a river deity, a work by Vincenzo Vela.
