Novazzano combines historic religious buildings with hiking trails in the town and surrounding countryside. If you are looking for a hotel in Novazzano, the buildings’ history and the routes described here can offer practical clues to help you decide what to focus on during your stay. The trails differ in their named destinations and in how they connect the town centre, hills and border area.

Novazzano lies 346 metres above sea level on the border with Italy. The town is approximately three kilometres as the crow flies south of Mendrisio station, which is on the Bellinzona–Lugano–Chiasso railway line and the Gotthard railway.

Churches, Oratories and Local History

The collegiate church of Santi Quirico e Giulitta is a single-nave building dating from the late 17th century, designed by Innocenzo Regazzoni of Balerna. The lower part of the bell tower dates from the 12th century, making it considerably older than the church. A balustrade of Arzo marble connects the Madonna chapel on the right and the Chapel of the Cross on the left to form a shared presbytery.

Art and architectural history come together in the Oratorio dell’Annunciata, which contains a Baroque altar dating from 1711 by Antonio Catenazzi, a stucco artist from Mendrisio, as well as a 16th-century fresco. In the 16th century, the rectangular choir replaced the semicircular apse of the former parish church. An artwork and a change to the church building from the same period thus sit alongside an older architectural context.

The Oratorio della Santissima TrinitĂ  in Castel di Sotto has medieval Romanesque origins. Its original apse has been preserved and is partly built of sandstone blocks; parts of the original roof and masonry are also visible. The oratory and the collegiate church reflect different periods: here, medieval origins; there, a church dating from the late 17th century, with an older lower section of the bell tower.

The Novazzano Way of the Cross comprises 14 chapels, was laid out between 1936 and 1938, and leads to Monte della Croce. Brusata is also part of the local landscape: the district is listed in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National Importance (ISOS). Novazzano also has an inventory of cultural property maintained by the Canton of Ticino. The Masseria della Pobbia is considered the most important testimony to Novazzano’s farming past. At the beginning of the new century, it was relocated to the Ticino section of the Ballenberg open-air museum.

Hiking Trails and Landscape Around Novazzano

In Novazzano, the Mendrisiotto hiking trail runs from the Penz–Ponte Faloppia area through the town centre and over Monte Morello to Brusata, towards Prella di Genestrerio. The “Lungo il confine sud del Ticino” hike also passes through Brusata before descending to the centre of Novazzano. These sequences of place names offer two different ways to get a sense of the town and its surroundings.

The Valle della Motta forest reserve stretches across Novazzano, Coldrerio and Mendrisio. Its landscape includes woods, ponds, wetlands, streams, meadows and fields. The path through the Parco della Valle della Motta is three kilometres long, and its main access point is in Novazzano. If a clearly specified distance matters for your plans, this provides a useful point of reference.

Hiking trails also connect Novazzano with the neighbouring municipalities of Ronago, Uggiate/Trevano and Bizzarone; they have been open to the public since 1999. Novazzano also has a forest exercise trail with several fitness stations for outdoor activity. The cross-border trails, the path through the valley reserve and the exercise trail thus offer different ways to explore the landscape.

The 1.5-kilometre cycling and pedestrian route between Novazzano and the Resiga area passes through predominantly green areas and forms part of the regional R Me 2 Stabio–Chiasso–Seseglio cycle route. Before setting off, check the trail conditions and current signage on site.

Winegrowing in Mendrisiotto

Alongside Merlot, an important hallmark of Ticino’s wine and viticulture history, La Costa grows eight other international grape varieties. La Costa in Novazzano is one of the stops on the Bike&Wine experience. Its route details may change, so check the information before making your plans.
