If you’re looking for a hotel in Muzzano, the natural setting around Laghetto di Muzzano and the village’s historic buildings offer two concrete points of reference for planning your stay. A circular route of approximately 3 km passes through the nature reserve and the village center. This allows you to focus on the landscape and village history as distinct highlights.

The Laghetto as a natural setting

Laghetto di Muzzano covers 22 hectares. It is a rare example of a glacial pond in the hilly countryside, with undeveloped shores. These features give the area its own distinctive landscape character. Its history also includes Pro Natura Svizzera’s acquisition of the Laghetto in 1945.

The official paths in the nature reserve are freely accessible at all times. Local trail conditions may change; check conditions on site before your visit. The area is also home to the Apiario didattico di Pro Natura Ticino, which has four beehives. For travelers interested in nature and bees, the project adds another specific topic to explore alongside the pond.

Circular route and planning your time

The circular route around the Laghetto is approximately 3 km long, and you can start at various points. Depending on wildlife observations and breaks, the walk takes around one to two hours. The duration can therefore vary: if you’d like to linger along the way, be sure to include breaks in your plans.

The route partly follows footpaths and roads and passes through Muzzano’s village center. So its character is defined by more than its approximate length: the changing mix of paths, road sections, and the village is also part of the route. This provides a shared, concrete setting for both the natural area and the village center, without requiring you to compare different routes.

Contrada alta and historic houses

Contrada alta is the oldest part of the village and sits higher than the rest of the village center. Its buildings show medieval features and have been carefully restored. Those interested in the development of historic village centers will find a clearly identified district with its own distinctive location within Muzzano.

Opposite the church building stand the Lamoni e Fè patrician houses, dating from the 18th century. Ca’ da Fè is a grand residence from the second half of the 19th century. It is set in a large park with a privileged view of the lake. The details about the houses thus cover different construction periods and descriptions: the patrician houses opposite the church building and the residence in the park.

Churches and traces of the past

The Chiesa di S. Maria dell’Annunciazione was built in the mid-17th century as a reconstruction of an older building. It stands beside a small enclosed church square. The historical record for the Cappella di S. Andrea in Agnuzzo goes further back: it was mentioned as early as 1208. Its bell tower has a Romanesque base structure and a Baroque upper section.

These buildings offer different clues to the history of the village: for the Chiesa, the focus is on its reconstruction and enclosed square; for the Cappella, it is on its early mention and the combination of two architectural features in the bell tower. Together with Contrada alta and the houses, they show that Muzzano’s historic character cannot be reduced to a single building or period of construction.
