Melano between the lake and Monte Generoso

Melano is a locality in the municipality of Val Mara in the Swiss canton of Ticino. On the eastern shore of Lake Lugano, at the foot of Monte Generoso, lakeside and mountain landscapes meet as two distinct sides of the destination. When looking for a hotel in Melano, this combination can help you decide what to focus on during your trip. Are you mainly interested in local history and architecture, or would you rather centre your stay around hiking and scenery?

For orientation, Melano lies about 2 kilometres south of Maroggia railway station on the Swiss Federal Railways’ Bellinzona–Chiasso line.

Alpe di Melano is located on the slopes of Monte Generoso, in the Val Mara area, at an altitude of about 917 metres. From there, you can enjoy views of Lake Lugano and the surrounding hills. Its elevation and views provide a specific point of reference for nature-focused visits; the historic buildings offer a different focus for your stay.

History and architecture

Melano was first mentioned in a document in 799 and was an important lakeside port in the Middle Ages. The old Church of Sant’Andrea already existed as an independent parish in the second half of the 15th century. The present building was begun in 1846 to a design by Luigi Fontana of Muggio; the Baroque bell tower of the former church has been preserved. The independent parish in the 15th century and the start of construction of the present building are therefore clearly separated in time.

The Santuario Madonna del Castelletto stands above Lake Ceresio, at a site where a fortified medieval structure may once have existed. Construction of the sanctuary began in 1633, following the miracle of the Madonna del latte’s tears. The possible fortification and the start of construction of the sanctuary belong to different periods.

Another point of interest in the history of local architecture is the Portico Polatta. It was built by Francesco Polatta, an architect and military engineer. Along with the churches, it adds another named building to Melano’s historical highlights.

Hiking and views

The Sentiero dei cinque Comuni begins near the Sovaglia sports ground in Melano. The route is 9 kilometres long and has 300 metres of elevation gain. It is considered easy, is suitable for all groups and can be walked year-round. Check local conditions before setting out. The distance and elevation gain indicate the scale of the route; its easy rating and year-round accessibility add information about difficulty and season.

Planning a hotel stay in Melano

When looking for a hotel in Melano, you can use the different themes as a starting point for your choice: the sanctuary, Sant’Andrea and Portico Polatta represent religious and architectural history, while Alpe di Melano combines a mountain setting with views. The Sentiero offers specific information on distance, elevation gain, difficulty and season. This makes it easier to tailor your stay to whether you are more interested in history, scenery or hiking.
