Discover Dongio: Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Dongio
Dongio is a village and former municipality in Acquarossa, in the Blenio district of the canton of Ticino. The village’s history can be traced through buildings from different centuries, as well as named routes with different destinations and descriptions. If you are planning a trip, you can get to know Dongio through its specific cultural sites and trails.
Churches and Historic Sites
The parish church of San Luca evangelista e San Fiorenzo is a late Baroque building constructed between 1760 and 1767. A landslide destroyed the former parish church and part of the village in 1758; the present church was built afterwards. Its late Baroque architecture is therefore linked to a defining moment in Dongio’s history.
In the hamlet of Crespogno, the Oratory of San Giovanni Battista dates from the 16th century and offers another point of reference in time. The Case dei Pagani are among Dongio’s historic monuments. They consist of medieval fortifications built to protect against enemy incursions. Two different building purposes are thus evident: protection through the fortifications at the Case dei Pagani, and the rebuilding of a parish church after 1758.
The Grotti di Dongio are among the area’s important historic and cultural sites. The Predacài press in Via dei Grotti was built in 1789 and is a cultural asset of cantonal importance. The Ghiacciaia adds a different history of use to these sites: the old ice house was formerly used to store food.
Trails and their destinations
The Circuito Dongio-Satro is a 6.6-kilometre circular route designated as accessible. It starts in the square in front of Dongio’s municipal building and leads to the small Romanesque church of San Remigio. The stated route length and named destination provide practical details for planning your route.
Historic Trail No. 3 includes the Vecchia strada del Satro between Acquarossa and Dongio and can be travelled on foot or by bicycle. The Circuito Dongio-Motto follows a hiking trail from Dongio to the Casa dei Pagani. On the return journey, an easy cycle path follows the route of the former railway line from Biasca to Comprovasco. The two Circuiti also have different stated destinations: San Remigio for the Dongio-Satro route and the Casa dei Pagani for the Dongio-Motto route.
