Acquacalda: Nature and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Acquacalda
When planning a stay in Acquacalda, the main considerations are its Alpine natural attractions and the trails of the Lucomagno area. The Centro Pro Natura Lucomagno in Acquacalda is located at an altitude of 1,750 m in an Alpine landscape listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments. The Centro is also a starting point for numerous walks, hikes and trekking routes.
Accommodation and stays
The Centro Pro Natura Lucomagno offers accommodation for a total of 36 people in rooms and small dormitories with six or eight beds. The Centro also has a camping area with 20 pitches for tents and minibuses, as well as two bungalows. These are different accommodation options within the centre that you can take into account when planning your stay. The Centro is generally open from May to October; check opening times for your travel dates.
The Centro has a bar-restaurant with a large terrace, a banquet hall and a conference room. It prepares traditional, vegetarian and vegan dishes, where available, and uses organic produce and products from the Valle del Sole whenever possible. On request, a guided hike to Alpe Pian Segno is available, including a tasting of local cheese. Confirm the availability of this excursion before travelling.
Nature and landscape
The short Naturetum circular trail is next to the Centro and leads through wetlands, rocks, forests and meadows. Naturetum is home to more than 200 plant species, whose flora visitors can admire without leaving the centre. The natural experience extends beyond this circular trail: the Piora, Lucomagno and Dötra region is listed in the Inventory of Landscapes, Sites and Natural Monuments of National Importance. Soluble rock formations, including sinkholes and swallow holes, are also found in the Lucomagno area.
The Selvasecca forest reserve lies along the Lucomagno road near Acquacalda. It features Zermatt spruce forest, marshland and peat bogs. Its animal inhabitants include deer, roe deer, squirrels, foxes, amphibians and many birds; with patience, they can be observed. The Centro recommends a circular trail through the forest reserve. When planning, bear in mind that local conditions may affect access.
Hiking trails and excursions
The Sentiero dell’Acqua connects the Centro Pro Natura in Acquacalda with the village of Dötra. The trail is 3.7 km long, the stated walking time is 1 hour and 15 minutes, and you can walk it in either direction. Along the way, it passes four landscapes of national importance, each with an explanatory information board. The trail explores how climate change affects Alpine landscapes. Check trail conditions before setting out.
The Alpi del Lucomagno circular trail starts in Acquacalda, follows marked route number 7 and successively leads to the old and new alpine pastures of Alpe Pian Segno, Alpe Gana, Alpe Croce, Alpe Pertusio, Alpe Casaccia, Alpe Sanprou and Alpe Pozzetta. Another mountain hiking route by TicinoSentieri starts and ends in Acquacalda; it passes through Pian Segno, Campo Solario, Ospizio Santa Maria, Alpe Pertusio and Alpe Gana.
For an alternative route to Capanna Cadagno, the trail starts at the Acquacalda bus stop and leads through the protected Selva Secca stone pine forest, past small lakes and streams, to Passo del Sole. Another hiking option to Capanna Cadagno starts at Passo del Lucomagno, takes just under four hours and is rated T2. The respective starting points and times help you plan different routes without confusing them with the short Sentiero dell’Acqua.
