Gnosca: protected stream landscape and historic churches
Accommodation in Gnosca
Gnosca is a district of Bellinzona in the canton of Ticino, located in the Riviera Valley. The village lies at the entrance to the Riviera Valley, on the Ticino River; Claro is opposite Gnosca. Two specific aspects of the village are central to planning your trip: the protected landscape along the Gnosca stream and the historic church sites, including the ruins of San Giovanni Battista. A hike leads from San Giovanni Battista in Gnosca to the monastery of Santa Maria Assunta in Claro; an up-to-date access notice is important for this route.
The Riviera Valley and its protected stream landscape
The Gnosca stream valley and the waterfall form a protected landscape area. The waterfall on the Riale di Gnosca lies just above the village centre and is protected. The stream mouth is also among Gnosca’s protected natural areas. The protection information thus distinguishes between the valley area with the waterfall and the mouth, which is designated as a protected natural area.
Church sites and history
The parish church of San Pietro Martire is listed in the edition of the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property dated January 1, 2026. The church complex comprises the choir and the church as separate components; both are associated with parcel 214.
San Giovanni Battista is a ruin documented as early as 1202. The first church on the site was built in the first half of the 12th century; San Giovanni Battista was deconsecrated in 1783. It was restored in 1950; between 1990 and 1992, the surviving walls were consolidated with the involvement of Tita Carloni and Angelo Martella. The aim was to make the structures easier to understand and improve access. Today, San Giovanni Battista is an exhibition space; check access before your visit.
In the Middle Ages, Gnosca belonged to the gastaldia of Claro; at the same time, both the Archdiocese of Milan and the Diocese of Como claimed the village. In 1335, Gnosca is mentioned as being under Bellinzona’s jurisdiction. Graves discovered by chance may be connected with the Golasecca culture; Gnosca may also preserve a necropolis that has not yet been sufficiently researched.
Hike to Claro: details and access
The hike from San Giovanni Battista in Gnosca to the monastery of Santa Maria Assunta in Claro is 6.1 kilometres long, takes two hours and involves 408 metres of ascent. Route details may change if the route is modified. On August 26, 2026, this hike was reported closed due to an inaccessible section. Check the current status before planning your trip.
The route to San Giovanni Battista in the village centre follows the Bellinzona–Biasca cantonal road; turn left at the entrance to the village. This direction concerns access to the village and should be distinguished from the hike to Claro, which has been reported closed. Check local conditions before setting off.
