Niederbüren: Culture, the Thur and Leisure
Accommodation in Niederbüren
Niederbüren is a rural municipality on the Thur and has preserved a picturesque hilly landscape. Its proximity to the river and natural surroundings invite you to go for walks and relax. At the same time, church art, music history, industrial history and leisure activities offer a range of different themes. You can tailor your stay to the interests that matter most for your trip.
Local History and Church Art
The local history goes back to an early written mention: in 737, Niederbüren was mentioned under the name “Gaulichsbüren” in a deed of donation to the Abbey of St. Gall. Other historical traces include Lindenberg Castle, visible from its wall remains, and the 18th-century courthouse. Today, it is preserved as the country inn “Zur alten Herberge.”
St. Michael’s Church is a Rococo church dating from 1761/63. It is known for its magnificent scagliola altar and stucco work. A guidebook with detailed descriptions and pictures of the church is available from the parish office; check availability before your visit. The guidebook lets you view the artworks with the help of its explanations.
Music and Industrial History
The Rock & Pop Museum Niederbüren is Switzerland’s first rock and pop museum. Its exhibition traces the development of popular music from the early 20th century to the 2000s. Guided tours share stories about music history, artists and bands, as well as individual songs. The focus is therefore not only on the development of a musical genre over time, but also on the people and works featured during the tours.
The Sorntal Textile Museum is housed in a former textile factory building dating from 1850. It displays operational textile machines spanning the period from the beginnings of industrialisation to more recent times. The collection also includes wooden tools used in home-based industry, including handlooms and Jacquard looms. A visit to the museum offers a different way to explore history than the music and church attractions: the focus is on machines and tools used in textile production.
The Thur, Beaver Trail and Hiking
The WWF Beaver Trail runs along the Thur between Oberbüren and Niederbüren. At ten stations, it provides information about the beaver, Europe’s largest rodent, and its habitat. The trail connects the natural environment along the river with a specific wildlife and environmental theme. If you are interested in this topic, the stations offer a focus for your time outdoors.
Another option is the Schwarzenbach–Thurauen–Niederbüren hiking route: it follows the Thur from Schwarzenbach to Niederbüren and is listed as a moderately difficult hike, 14.9 kilometres long. The Beaver Trail and the hiking route differ in their focus: one features information at ten stations, while the other is a hike with a stated distance and difficulty level. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Niederbüren Leisure Park
Niederbüren Leisure Park offers more than 6,000 m² of play, sport and fun for all ages. The park’s Abentüürwält includes an 11-metre-high Western-style slide tower with four different slides. The tower is a distinctive feature of the park. The mini-golf course also has a special feature: its size meets national regulations, making it suitable for competitions.
For directions to the leisure park, the “Niederbüren, Freizeitpark” stop is a useful landmark: it is right next to the park. Culture, nature and the leisure park offer different ways to spend your time in Niederbüren, so you do not have to limit your plans to just one kind of activity.
