Oberhelfenschwil between culture and landscape

If you are looking for a hotel in Oberhelfenschwil, the area's cultural and landscape features provide concrete pointers for planning your stay. Highlights include the Paritätische Church, the castles of Neutoggenburg and Rüdberg, the Oberhelfenschwil Cultural Trail and the Neckertal Kneipp trails. Oberhelfenschwil is a locality in the political municipality of Neckertal in the Toggenburg region of the canton of St. Gallen. Until 2022, it was an independent municipality. The area's history links early records of its name with medieval castle and landholding arrangements.

The church and medieval traces

The Paritätische Church in Oberhelfenschwil is a protected site of cantonal importance. Its oldest parts date from the 13th or 14th century. An old Marian bell from 1501 is on display in a small tower by the church. This brings together two different time references: a range of centuries for the oldest building fabric and an exact year for the bell. If you would like to see the bell in person, check access in advance.

Castles with different histories

Neutoggenburg Castle is a large archaeological site with several systems of ramparts and ditches. It was first mentioned in 1270; its foundation is attributed to the Counts of Toggenburg. RĂĽdberg Castle was first mentioned in 1271 and was the seat of the St. Gallen abbey's ministeriales of RĂĽdberg. In both cases, the years indicate the first mention. The castles offer different points of reference for local history: at Neutoggenburg, the ramparts and ditches define the description of the site, while at RĂĽdberg, its historical role as the seat of the ministeriales is central.

Place names and historical landholding arrangements

The area's history extends beyond its castles. Alemanni settled the area early on; Oberhelfenschwil appears in documents as “Helfoltiswilare” in 882 and as “Oberhelfenschwil” in 1515. The Prince-Abbey of St. Gallen, the Counts of Toggenburg and the monastery of Alt St. Johann held land in Oberhelfenschwil. The different forms of the name provide chronological reference points for local history, while the landholding records identify other named actors.

The cultural trail and Kneipp trails

The Oberhelfenschwil Cultural Trail starts in the middle of the village at the Volg supermarket and is signposted throughout with brown cultural trail signs. The starting point at Volg offers a specific entry point to the route; the signs along the way help with navigation. Check the signs on site in case conditions change.

The Neckertal Kneipp trails include two circular routes with several Kneipp stations in Hemberg and Oberhelfenschwil, a hedge-learning trail and an orchard. As well as the circular routes and stations, the named features therefore also include a learning trail and an orchard. This gives them a different focus from the cultural trail: they add Kneipp and nature themes. If you choose your destination based on your interests, you can distinguish between local history and this broader range of themes.

The landscape setting

Oberhelfenschwil is located in BLN site 1414, “Thur landscape between Lichtensteig and Schwarzenbach,” a landscape of national importance. The designation places the area within a larger landscape, while the church and castles are individual cultural sites. Oberhelfenschwil lies at 798 m above sea level; its elevation ranges from 575 to 1,099 m above sea level. While the first figure gives the elevation of the locality, the second covers a broader range. The landscape and elevation thus complement the historical points of reference with a geographical perspective.
