Niederwil at the foot of the southern Jura
Accommodation in Niederwil
When looking for a hotel in Niederwil, it helps to decide whether you would rather focus on the landscape, a hike or local history. Niederwil SO is a village in the Lebern district of the canton of Solothurn and belongs to the municipality of Riedholz. Until 2010, Niederwil was an independent municipality; since 2011, the village has belonged to Riedholz. At 545 m above sea level, it lies on the lower southern slope of the Jura, at the foot of the Chamben and in the Unterleberberg region. Solothurn is about 5.5 kilometres north-northeast of Niederwil as the crow flies.
Between the Jura and the valley
The landscape around Niederwil is shaped by a valley hollow and two named ranges of hills. The Gummenbach valley hollow runs west to east between the Weissenstein range to the north and the Verena range to the south. The Siggern flows into the valley hollow; below the village, the Gummenbach joins the Siggern. The directions distinguish two levels of orientation: north and south locate the ranges, while west and east describe the course of the hollow. For travellers interested in nature and terrain, both the broader location and the waterways help put the area into context.
Hiking and the high-altitude route
The Solothurn–Niederwil loop offers a specific hiking option. At the old Oele in Niederwil, it crosses the Gumme and then climbs a short incline to Riedholz. The loop follows signposted hiking trails and is rated T1. It is accessible by train and bus; check current timetables for your travel dates. Before setting out, check the current route and conditions, as the rating may change if the route or the map information is updated.
A second way to explore the heights is the road from Niederwil: it climbs steeply to Balm and GĂĽnsberg, then continues from there to Oberbalmberg at 1,078 m above sea level. If travelling in this direction, take seasonal conditions into account. Hiking and driving involve different plans: a signposted T1 loop with a crossing and short climb, or a steeply ascending road towards Oberbalmberg.
Cultural history and nature conservation
Niederwil’s cultural history can also be explored through specific sites and connections. The Gummenstock at Gumme 1 in Niederwil is listed in category B of the 2021 edition of the Swiss Federal Inventory of Cultural Property. A historic cableway transported gypsum from Bergli in Günsberg to the gypsum factory in Niederwil. These offer two different ways into the village’s history: the inventory classification of a named property and a former industrial transport link between Günsberg and Niederwil.
One of the defined conservation objectives is to preserve habitats for adapted animal and plant species, particularly amphibians and dragonflies. This specific nature conservation objective adds an ecological perspective to the topographic description of the valley, ranges of hills and waterways.
