Discover Seewen: lake, trails and culture
Accommodation in Seewen
Seewen brings together a public lido on Lake Lauerz, two circular trails of different lengths and difficulty levels, cultural sites with a long history, and an artificial ice rink. You can plan your stay around what interests you most: a day of swimming, a hike, or time at the chapel and church.
Swimming at Lake Lauerz
The Seewen lido is on Lake Lauerz and offers swimming for children and adults. Facilities include a spacious sunbathing lawn, a sandy beach and a food and drink area. If you want to make your day at the lake more active, you can rent pedal boats and surf bikes on site. The various options combine swimming and time by the water with ways to enjoy the lido away from the beach as well.
For dining, Seewen Beach Restaurant serves dishes inspired by international cuisine and made with regional produce. These include homemade crispy fish bites from a local fisherman. This is a distinct feature of Seewen’s dining scene, alongside the lido’s food and drink area.
Two circular trails, two hiking profiles
The Gschichtliweg Schwyz is an easy, 3.54-kilometre circular themed trail. It starts at the Wintersried sports complex and returns there. There are stories at ten stops, and their content changes throughout the year. You can access the stories on your mobile phone via QR code; you do not need an app. Check local conditions before setting out.
At 7.70 kilometres and of moderate difficulty, the LEK circular trail 2022 “Auf den Urmiberg” is a longer hiking option. The circular hike crosses the Urmiberg, passes a high-trunk orchard, descends to the Muota and returns to Seewen via Wintersried. It passes through a traditional cultural landscape shaped by high-trunk fruit trees and dry-stone walls. You should also check local conditions before starting this route.
The distance and difficulty information makes it easy to compare the trails: the Gschichtliweg is shorter and rated easy, while the LEK circular trail is longer and moderately difficult. From Schwyz railway station, the Wintersried sports complex is about a ten-minute walk. Schwyz railway station is also served by direct trains from Lucerne and Zurich, making it a convenient starting point for the LEK circular trail. Check current train connections before travelling.
Chapel, church and artificial ice rink
The Old Chapel in Seewen was built in the 16th century and remains a place of pilgrimage today. Various concerts are held there from time to time; individual dates vary. This brings religious significance and recurring cultural events together at the site, without implying a fixed events calendar.
Seewen Parish Church also has its own building history: it was built in 1961 as the New Marienkirche and became a parish church in 1966. Anyone interested in the development of local religious buildings can compare this more recent history with that of the older chapel.
The Zingel artificial ice rink was officially opened on 10 September 1977. The rink’s restaurant serves snacks and drinks and offers a good view of the ice. Check whether the offering is currently available before visiting.
When choosing Seewen as a destination, it is easy to distinguish between the different options: swimming and the beach are the focus at Lake Lauerz, the two circular trails offer different hiking profiles, and the chapel, parish church and artificial ice rink add culture and sport. You can choose the activities that best suit your planned stay.
