Oberiberg is located in the district of Schwyz in the canton of Schwyz, Switzerland, on the Ibergereggstrasse between Einsiedeln and Schwyz. At around 1,130 metres, the village sits in a sunny high valley with forests, alpine meadows and streams, surrounded by mountain scenery. Experiences range from trails and winter activities to a marble run and historic religious sites. When planning your visit, the first question is therefore whether you are looking for a short loop, a themed trail, a hike planned around a set time, or activities in the snow.

Trails with different themes

The larch-wood marble run links several sections for races that appeal to all ages: wooden marbles roll over obstacles. If you would rather choose a trail with a specific theme, the Geological Hiking Trail on Roggenstock is a good option. It follows the Oberiberg–Tubenmoos–Roggenegg–Fuederegg–Steinboden–Tschalun route. Interactive stations provide information about how the Ybrig mountain landscape was formed. Its thematic focus sets it apart from a loop where the route itself or a friendly race takes centre stage.

The Erlebnisweg trail in the Oberiberg holiday village is a one-kilometre, stroller-friendly loop along the Minster. Barbecue spots along the way offer space for a break or a picnic. For a walk planned around a set time, the Adlerhorst offers a different option: a marked trail leads there from the car parks by the church or schoolhouse and takes about an hour. The Erlebnisweg is a short loop with a clearly defined distance; for the Adlerhorst, allow roughly an hour on a marked trail.

Winter trails and mountain scenery

In winter, a sledging run leads from Laucheren to Oberiberg and is suitable for all ages. Marked snowshoe trails for beginners and experienced snowshoers start from Oberiberg and Ibergeregg. Sledging operations are seasonal, and snowshoe trail conditions depend on the time of year. If you are planning these activities, check the conditions before your visit.

From the Laucheren mountain station, a narrow hiking trail passes yellow-flowering arnica meadows and gnarled spruce trees; with a little luck, you may spot marmots there. Another hiking trail passes through Isentobel towards Laucheren Chapel and by the Isentobel alpine hut. On Ibergeregg, a hiking route leads through moorland forests, which are among Switzerland’s increasingly rare and endangered habitats. Ibergeregg was named Landscape of the Year in 2019.

Ybrig has a bike park with three difficulty levels. Children and adults can learn the basics of mountain biking there, while beginners can practise their skills on the different trails. Alongside hiking and winter activities, there are also options for anyone interested in getting started with mountain biking.

Religious sites and history

Oberiberg has a medieval history shaped by alpine farming. Tourism developed after the village was discovered as a health resort. A ski lift was built there in 1938, at the time only the third in Switzerland.

An early ecclesiastical landmark was a mass chapel in Yberg, which later became a parish church and was consecrated by a bishop on 13 April 1350. St. John’s Church in Oberiberg was consecrated on 15 October 1876. The Chapel of Our Lady was consecrated in autumn 1880. The Lourdes Grotto was built from 1949 to 1951 and consecrated on 7 October 1951. These sites mark different stages in Oberiberg’s religious history.
