Sent is a village in the municipality of Scuol in the canton of Graubünden, situated on one of the southern terraces of the Lower Engadine. The village combines a densely built-up centre with trails into the surrounding landscape. The Lower Engadine is steeper, narrower and wilder than the Upper Engadine. This regional setting provides a landscape context for the view of Sent.

Village Centre and Engadine Architectural History

Farmhouses and town houses stand close together in the village centre. A network of narrow paths, with several main lanes, passes by several squares. The village square in the centre has a magnificent fountain. The late Gothic village church of San Lurench can be seen from afar. At the western end of the village is the striking church ruin of San Peder, considered a landmark of Sent and privately owned.

The Senter gables also shape the village’s appearance. The so-called Senter gable is a curved central gable that adorns many distinguished houses. Most Senter gables and a large proportion of the grand residences date from the period after 1823, when large parts of the village had to be rebuilt following a devastating village fire. Some people from Sent acquired wealth abroad as mercenaries, confectioners or businesspeople, and built imposing houses in Sent. The Baroque Senter gables were brought to the Lower Engadine by craftsmen from the Tyrolean Inn Valley.

Culture and Art in Sent

The cultural programme at Grotta da cultura in Sent includes theatre performances, concerts, readings, discussion groups and art exhibitions. The park Parkin Sent Not Vital, designed by local artist Not Vital, is also among the village’s cultural attractions. Parkin Not dal Mot features sculptures and architectural installations, including a house made of Murano glass with a staircase and a house that disappears into the ground at the push of a button. Parkin Not dal Mot may only be entered as part of a guided tour. Check the current tour arrangements before visiting.

One activity combines discovering sgraffito with sampling Engadine specialities. It is listed as available from 25 August to 27 October 2026. Check the current dates before making plans.

Trails and Landscape Around Sent

One variant of the Via Engiadina leads from Motta Naluns via Sent to Val Sinestra and on to Ramosch. Check current trail conditions before setting out. From Sent, unpaved farm and natural-surface roads lead into the quiet, wooded Val Sinestra. Its unspoilt landscape contrasts with the open high-altitude hike. This route therefore brings together contrasting landscapes: the open uplands and the wooded valley.

Val d’Uina is accessible by public transport or car. From Sur En, an unpaved trail leads into the gorge. There, a 600-metre-long path runs high above the mountain stream through an almost vertical rock face. Check current safety guidance before setting out; mountain conditions can change with the seasons.

Getting There and Seasonal Activities

Sent has a direct PostBus connection to Scuol-Tarasp railway station. Check the timetable for your travel dates. The Sent natural ice rink is located right at the entrance to the village and is a seasonal winter offering: whether it operates depends on temperatures. Skates can be rented directly at the ice rink. Plan this activity according to the season and conditions.
