Brail is a district of the municipality of Zernez in the Lower Engadine, situated at an altitude of 1,636 metres. Geographically, the village belongs to the Lower Engadine, but linguistically and culturally it is already associated with the Upper Engadine. This difference is linked to the Romansh Puter dialect. Brail borders the Swiss National Park to the south. Hiking trails and the history of the Church of San Tumasch offer different points of interest during your stay.

Hiking with a variety of trail profiles

The Zernez–Brail hike is 7.5 kilometres long and takes about two hours. It passes through Prazet and follows the Via Engiadina trail to Brail. The route is suitable for pushchairs and offers views of the Inn or the opposite side of the valley in the national park. Pushchair suitability depends on trail conditions. Treat the duration as an estimate, as route changes may affect the figures.

Another hike leads from Brail via Alp Barlas-ch and Alp Munt to Zernez. It starts at the bus stop in Brail and initially crosses meadows towards Alp Barlas-ch. The route crosses several small mountain streams as it passes from valley to valley. The difference from the Zernez–Brail hike lies in both the time required and the character of the trail: the first tour is described as around two hours and 7.5 kilometres; the second crosses meadows, passes through several valleys and follows small mountain streams. This makes it possible to compare the two routes by their differing landscape features.

The winter route from Cinuos-chel to Brail

The Cinuos-chel–Brail route passes the village of Brail, which is reached via a steep descent. Conditions can vary in winter. The route is part of the «Loipa dal Sulagl», or «Sun Trail» in English, and lies on the sunny side of the Engadine. It is 1.9 kilometres long, takes about 15 minutes and is closed. As operations are seasonal, check the current status before planning to use this route.

The Church of San Tumasch and local history

The Protestant Church of San Tumasch offers a historical connection to the village. It was first mentioned in written records in 1499 and converted to the Reformed faith in 1553; the present Protestant church was built around 1650. It was last renovated in 1984/86. These dates describe different stages: the first written mention should not be confused with the construction of the present church building, and the Reformation is another historical milestone. Those interested in Brail’s history can distinguish between these stages rather than reducing the development to a single year of construction.

Getting to Brail

Brail can be reached by the Rhaetian Railway from Chur, Landquart/Prättigau or the Upper Engadine. Via Cinuos-chel/Brail station, the village is connected to the Engadine line between Pontresina and Scuol; Brail is also connected to the Engadine cantonal road. Check the timetable for your travel date before taking the train, as schedules can change. To plan your stay, it may help to decide on your main focus first: a hike via Prazet, the route via Alp Barlas-ch and Alp Munt, the winter route or the local history surrounding San Tumasch.
