Samnaun: Hiking Trails, Disc Golf and Culture
Accommodation in Samnaun
Samnaun is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and belongs to the Engiadina Bassa/Val Müstair region. It comprises the five hamlets of Compatsch, Laret, Plan, Ravaisch and Samnaun. The name therefore refers both to the municipality and to one of its hamlets. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these place names distinct: Ravaisch and Laret also feature on one of the snowshoe trails described here. When choosing a hotel in Samnaun, it can help to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay – for example, hiking, disc golf, history or regional cheese production.
Hiking and Snowshoe Tours
Samnaun has 250 kilometres of well-signposted hiking trails. Their availability may vary depending on seasonal conditions. The Samnaun Valley also has two well-marked and secured snowshoe trails suitable for beginners. Winter access depends on snow conditions and wildlife protection requirements; check the current trail conditions before setting out.
The second snowshoe trail leads from Samnaun-Ravaisch along the Schergenbach towards Samnaun-Laret. The Pater Maurus Carnot Trail offers another option for hiking and walking. It can be used in summer and winter, although trail conditions remain subject to the season. Along the trail, 17 information panels tell visitors about the life of the distinguished Samnaun native, Father Maurus Carnot.
Disc Golf and Stories Along the Way
Samnaun’s disc golf facilities include a family course and a pro layout, each with 18 holes, by the Vitaparcours in Samnaun Dorf. There is also a nine-hole course on the Alptrider Sattel. The disc golf courses in Samnaun offer 27 varied holes to play in a single round. Check the course configurations before your trip; seasonal conditions may affect access.
The Fairy Tale Trail offers its own themed experience: the story of Murmina and Murmin is told at ten stops. Those interested in local history can explore the valley’s past from a different perspective at the Samnaun Valley Museum. The museum tells of the difficult living conditions of a bygone era and is housed in an old farmhouse typical of the region.
The Samnaun Valley Museum is visited on a guided tour, which lasts around 60 minutes. Seasonal arrangements for guided tours may change. So check the current visiting options in advance if you are planning a museum visit.
Cheese Culture and Relaxation
The Samnaun dairy was originally founded in 1960 by 30 farmers as a cooperative. A guided tour gives visitors an insight into cheese production; tours are offered seasonally. Samnaun cheese is a semi-hard cheese aged for between three months and one year. A visit to the dairy and a description of the cheese thus offer two different insights into regional cheese culture: its production and its product.
The Alpenquell Erlebnisbad Samnaun includes a sauna area with panoramic views. Access and opening arrangements may vary; check the current conditions before your visit.
