Discover Wolfisberg
Accommodation in Wolfisberg
Wolfisberg lies at 670 m above sea level on a terrace on the southern slope of the foremost Jura chain, the Lebernberg. The village is around 200 m above the Swiss Plateau, above Oberbipp in the Oberaargau region. Meadows, extensive forests and rock formations shape the landscape of the Bipper Jura. From the ridges around Wolfisberg, the view stretches across the Swiss Plateau to the Bernese Alps. Mountain scenery, hiking trails and local history offer different ways to shape your stay.
Landscape and protected cultural landscape
The area around Wolfisberg extends from a landslide terrace across a steep slope to the ridge of the Lebernberg, which is made of Malm limestone and features several rocky outcrops. Protected landscapes include the Buechmatt-Ankehubel alpine pasture landscape and the richly varied slope above the village. Dry habitats are also protected and must be maintained through extensive farming. Shrubs, hedges and groups of trees in fields are to be preserved. Historic routes are also protected, including their alignment and physical fabric. Natural landforms and traditional landscape features thus come together in the surrounding area.
Hiking and mountain biking
A circular hike starts in Wolfisberg, leads mostly uphill via Buechmatt to Hällchöpfli, and returns to Wolfisberg via Ankehubel. Hällchöpfli is a 1,230 m-high summit above Rumisberg. From there, panoramic views stretch across the Swiss Plateau, the Alps and the Jura. There are a few parking spaces in Wolfisberg for the hike described; taking the bus is recommended. Check the latest route and travel information before setting off.
In the Bipper Jura, well-maintained hiking trails pass through flower meadows and shady woodland paths to viewpoints. A mountain biking route runs from Attiswil via Ankehubel down to Wolfisberg and back to Attiswil. Ankehubel therefore features on both routes: it is on the return leg to Wolfisberg on the circular hike, and on the route from Attiswil to Wolfisberg for mountain bikers. The different starting points and modes of travel can help you choose a tour that suits your interests.
Legend Trail and directions
The various routes of the Legend Trail start at the southern foot of the Jura, at the aare-seeland-mobil railway stations in Attiswil, Wiedlisbach, Oberbipp and Niederbipp. They lead up to the crest of the first Jura chain. UV- and water-resistant maps of the Legend Trail are available in the information boxes at the car parks in Schoren, Farnern and Wolfisberg. This lets you familiarise yourself with the routes in advance and choose one of the stated starting points for your plans.
History and local life
From around 1300 to 1413, Wolfisberg was the only mountain settlement in the Erlinsburg district. In 1491, a glassmaking industry subject to a tithe operated here; slag from this production has been preserved as archaeological finds. Coal burning in the high forest on the Leberberg near Wolfisberg is documented for 1597. The village’s history thus encompasses various activities connected with the use of the landscape.
In later centuries, too, home-based work was part of the local economy alongside farming. In the 19th and 20th centuries, for example, blouses were sewn for textile factories in Wangen an der Aare. However, this work could not prevent people from moving away. The existing farmsteads are important to the village’s character and have ecological value; they complement the historical record of farming and village life with a visible part of the settlement landscape.
Local offerings include Remo Schär’s farm shop. It sells products made on the farm, as well as wine and spirits. If you are looking for a hotel in Wolfisberg, the protected landscape, hiking trails or local history can help you choose the focus of your stay.
