Wangenried between the Aare Plain and the Moraine Ridge

Wangenried is a locality in the political municipality of Wangen an der Aare in the Canton of Bern. On 1 January 2024, Wangenried merged with this municipality. The locality lies at an elevation of about 473 metres above sea level, two kilometres south of Wangen an der Aare and nine kilometres east of Solothurn as the crow flies. The distance to Solothurn therefore refers to the straight-line distance, not the road distance. As a linear village, Wangenried stretches along a northwest-facing slope on the southern edge of the Aare Plain in the Oberaargau.

The area comprises a gently undulating section of the northern Swiss Plateau. Most of it is occupied by the Wangenried rise, a ground moraine ridge left by the Rhone Glacier during the Ice Age. The highest point in the village is on the Rüti: it reaches 495 metres above sea level. The locality’s approximate elevation of 473 metres and the village high point at 495 metres are therefore two different elevation figures.

Lake Inkwil lies on the border between the cantons of Solothurn and Bern. Its Solothurn side, together with the shore area, is designated a cantonal nature reserve. The lake is extremely shallow, with a maximum depth of five metres. A site in the lake has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” since 2011.

Culture, art and local history

Waudbüni is an open-air theatre association from Wangen an der Aare and Wangenried. Productions and dates may change, so check the details for the relevant performance if you are planning a theatre visit.

One specific location in the village is the “Hoschtet”: it is behind the schoolhouse and below the former Leuenberger inn.

The Heimelig Wangenried yodel club began on 8 March 1944 with an all-male membership. Today, the club is a mixed choir. This comparison over time shows how the club’s membership has changed since it was founded.

The Kunst-Hof exhibition space displays paintings and drawings. Kunst-Hof also has a creative garden with sculptures. This art offering therefore includes both works in the exhibition space and three-dimensional works in the garden.

Local history includes finds of coins, buildings and everyday objects from Roman times. These add a historical perspective on Wangenried to its more recent cultural associations.

Circular walks and orientation

Four circular walks start and end at the Wangenried, Schule station platform. If you are planning one of them, check the latest route information before setting out, as route lists may change. The information about the starting and ending point helps you distinguish these four circular routes from other walking or hiking options.

For broader travel planning, information about the municipality of Wangen an der Aare is relevant: it has train and bus connections, access to the A1 motorway and ample parking. The municipality is also considered a starting point for walks or hikes through the Aare landscape. This municipality-level information should be distinguished from the four circular walks starting at the Wangenried, Schule station platform. As transport connections and parking conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before travelling.
