Niederbipp offers visitors a variety of attractions: the Lehnfluh nature reserve, hiking routes starting at the railway station, historic sites on the southern Jura foothills, and art and family activities.

Nature on the southern Jura foothills

The village extends across the flat alluvial fan formed by the Bipperbach stream at the southern foot of the Jura, and into the Bipperamt plain. Niederbipp lies at 468 m above sea level, roughly halfway between Olten and Solothurn; as seen from Solothurn, it is about 14 km to the northeast as the crow flies.

The small Lehnfluh nature reserve lies on the southern slope of the Jura, on the border with the Canton of Solothurn. Its mosaic includes open dry habitats, rocky areas, extensively managed scrubland, and oak-hornbeam forests. Lehnfluh is also considered a hotspot for xerophytic plants adapted to severe dryness. In the protected area, you must not alter the natural state of the rocks or the plant growth.

Hiking trails and viewpoints

The Sagenweg starts at the aare-seeland-mobil railway station at the southern foot of the Jura and climbs to the ridge of the first Jura range. Most of the texts on its information boards come from a collection of stories in the Solothurn dialect compiled by Elisabeth Pfluger. You can get a free map of the Sagenweg from municipal offices, restaurants, and information boards in car parks.

Eight hiking loops start and finish at Niederbipp railway station. There is no connecting bus or return route to your car, so plan your start and return accordingly and check the connections before setting out. One circular route passes over Vordere Erlinsburg: it is 14.5 km long, with 834 m of ascent and 834 m of descent, and takes 4 hours and 50 minutes to walk. Map revisions and trail conditions can change route measurements; check the details before setting out.

Above Waldenalp, a publicly accessible panoramic viewpoint offers views of Niederbipp and the Mittelland, as well as a place to linger. Facilities include a large table, benches, and a barbecue area. Before the final climb to the rocks at Erlinsburg, the VVN maintains a fire pit.

Culture and history

Niederbipp Reformed Church lies outside the village at the southern foot of the Jura and dates back to a medieval place of worship. It took on its present appearance in 1669 and 1712. Its interior includes an elaborately carved Renaissance pulpit, an 18th-century baptismal font, and stained-glass windows by Robert Giesbrecht from 1910.

Archaeological traces also give the landscape a long history: finds from the Bronze Age, La Tène period, Roman era, and early to late Middle Ages have been documented at Lehnfluh and the Erlinsburg castles. A large rock band stretches from Waldenalp towards Oensingen; several castles once stood at various points along it. The burial mound near Rütihof dates from the Hallstatt period, around 800 to 475 BC, and today serves as a resting place with benches provided by the VVN.

Räberstöckli is another cultural venue in Niederbipp. The cultural association regularly holds exhibitions and events there with artists. The annual programme includes painting, stone and wood sculpture, arts and crafts, music, literature, and theatre. Räberstöckli is about a five-minute walk from Niederbipp SBB railway station; check the current calendar for specific event dates.

A family outing

The Bipperlisi riddle combines puzzles with information about the Bipperlisi railway’s 100-year history and follows the railway line from Solothurn to Niederbipp. It is designed for children aged 4 to 10 and takes about 1.5 hours, excluding the outward and return journeys. The riddle trail can be completed in any weather. At the end, there is a large playground, toilets, a changing table, and a picnic area. The approximate time needed for the riddle is a different time frame from the walking time for the circular route over Vordere Erlinsburg; travel to and from the riddle is not included.
