Rüderswil combines outdoor trails and activities with many reminders of local and church history. The municipality comprises four localities: Rüderswil, Schwanden, Zollbrück and Ranflüh. For planning your trip, several different highlights are of particular interest: agricultural knowledge, a digitally designed leisure trail and a memorial hiking trail, as well as the church and its historic ensemble.

Trails, nature and outdoor themes

The Farmers’ Educational Trail starts and ends at Ramsei or Zollbrück railway stations. Its route is around 7.3 kilometres long and runs between these places. With railway stations at both ends, the trail is also easy to reach by public transport. Its themes include nature, animals, plants, biodiversity and Swiss agriculture. Interactive quiz stations complement the information and give the trail a distinctive educational focus.

The Emme Leisure Trail offers a different focus. This web-based, multimedia trail combines outdoor activity with history, culture and nature; its interactive stations work without an app download. The 18 virtual stations provide background information on topics such as the gold rush, medieval routes, castles and churches. The trail starts right next to Zollbrück railway station, and participation is free. No reservation or advance registration is required; the trail can be walked at any time, although the weather may affect accessibility. Check transport connections to the station before setting out.

The two activities differ primarily in their themes: agriculture and biodiversity are at the heart of the Farmers’ Educational Trail, while the Emme Leisure Trail focuses on historical and cultural content presented digitally. Rüderswil also offers walks along the Emme and mountain bike tours over various «Höger» and «Chrächen».

An 8-kilometre memorial hiking trail commemorates the 350th anniversary of the Peasants’ War. It passes the Leuenberger monument and the house where Niklaus Leuenberger lived. Leuenberger was born in 1615 in Schönholz in the Nesselgraben and was appointed leader of the peasant movement. The trail thus links its memorial sites with the story of a specific person.

Church and local history

The church is a defining feature not only of the village centre, but of the whole of Rüderswil. It stands in a churchyard enclosed by a historic wall, which served as a cemetery until 1931. The ensemble comprises the church, the Pfrundschür to its east and the adjacent rectory. The rectory was built in 1720; the Pfrundschür is documented as far back as 1507. Rüderswil itself is first mentioned as a parish in 1275.

The church consists of a simple nave, a polygonal late Gothic choir and a tower built of unrendered tuff, considered the oldest part of the complex. The choir contains three windows dating from 1883: they depict Christ on the cross, Christ as a teacher and the risen Christ; there are also four heraldic panes. A plaque on the exterior wall commemorates Gottlieb Jakob Kuhn, who was pastor in Rüderswil from 1812 to 1824 and worked as a folk-song poet and historian.

Smaller details also tell the story of this church site. The church’s front garden contains the Gallus Bell, cast in 1423 and bearing the inscription «Sancte Galle Ora Pro Nobis». In 1993, the Pfrundschür was renovated with a steel, glass and timber structure inside its existing wooden walls and brought to its present condition. The architecture, memorial features and structural changes reveal different layers in the history of the ensemble.

Village scenery and breaks

The village scenery also includes two large lime trees, each designated a natural monument at a road junction. For a break, Rüderswil has a range of restaurants and meeting places where you can relax and enjoy yourself. So, alongside the trails and historic sights, there are also places to pause during the day.
