Stettlen: Local History and Routes in the Worblental
Accommodation in Stettlen
Stettlen combines its location in the Worblental with a distinctive local history and several specific themes to consider when planning a trip. The municipality lies east of the federal city of Bern, between Bantiger and Dentenberg, and comprises the villages of Stettlen and Deisswil. The church, a hike starting at the railway station, the Vita Parcours, the indoor swimming pool and Schwandiburg offer different ways to shape your stay.
Location and connection to Bern
The municipality includes, among other areas, a south-facing slope that is its main residential area, as well as surrounding recreational areas. Regionalverkehr Bern-Solothurn (RBS) connects the Stettlen and Deisswil stations to Bern main station in just under 20 minutes. This approximate journey time provides a useful point of comparison when deciding how to divide your stay between Stettlen and Bern. Check the current timetable for your travel date, as public transport connections may change.
Church and local history
Stettlen Church is a simple Baroque preaching hall with a three-sided choir end and a front tower. The three-sided end describes the shape at the end of the choir; the front tower stands at the front of the building. The church was built in 1729/30 under the direction of Niklaus Schiltknecht. Stettlen is first mentioned in a document in 1164—a much earlier milestone in the history of the village. On the church’s outer walls are seven tombstones commemorating five Stettlen pastors and two pastors’ wives. A historic heraldic stained-glass panel belonging to the municipal officials of Stettlen depicts the municipal coat of arms and, in an inscription, refers to the church’s reconstruction. The building’s design, tombstones and heraldic panel bring together architectural and local history. If you are planning to visit the church, check the current access arrangements.
Hiking and Vita Parcours
There are two distinct starting points for getting active. The “Stettlen-Utzlenberg-Dentenberg-Worb-Stettlen” hike starts directly at Stettlen RBS station; the return route follows the “Worbletalwärts” hiking trail across flat terrain back to the station. The Stettlen/Bolligen Vita Parcours No. 44, on the other hand, starts near the observation station. The comparison helps with orientation: the station is named as both the starting and return point for the hike, while the observation station is the reference point for the Vita Parcours start. This makes it easier to fit the two activities into your day according to their starting locations. Trail conditions and public transport connections may change; check both before setting out.
Indoor swimming pool and Schwandiburg
The indoor swimming pool operated by the municipality of Stettlen is open to the public; during the summer season, it also has a sunbathing lawn. Schwandiburg adds a castle complex to the local history: it was inhabited in the 12th and 13th centuries. It included a curtain wall, residential wing, tower and a chapel that is no longer visible today. The tower’s square stone walls, parts of the curtain wall and sections of the residential wing are still visible at Schwandiburg. The former complex and the surviving visible structures thus offer two different ways of viewing the site.
