The north shore of Wohlensee, the Birchen landscape garden and historic buildings offer different ways to shape a stay in Wohlen Near Bern. You can plan around protected habitats, a tour by the lake or places with cultural and historical significance.

Wohlensee and protected habitats

The north shore of Wohlensee is a cantonal nature reserve. Its shallow-water and mudflat zones, as well as its islands, provide resting places for migrating wading birds. The silted-up Leubach Bay is located in the area and is listed in the national inventory of amphibian spawning sites as a site of importance. The lakeshore, islands and bay are therefore part of a natural environment whose features can be seen both in the water and along the shore.

There are also special habitats away from the north shore: the former Löör gravel pit in Uettligenfeld provides a habitat for wild bees, digger and spider wasps, as well as specialized ground beetles and spiders. The ponds in the Illiswil natterjack toad area were used as spawning sites by grass frogs, natterjack toads, common toads and alpine newts. In the Unterdettigen wetland, the diverse fauna and flora can be viewed from several points along the shore path. This path offers a practical opportunity for nature observation; the gravel pit and the natterjack toad area are highlighted here as habitats.

Gardens, courses and tours

The Birchen grounds near the Aare cover around 1.4 hectares and are maintained as a varied landscape garden. A limited part of the grounds is open to interested visitors as a place for visiting, meeting, experiencing and relaxing. Those interested in plants and natural materials can also find courses and seminars run by the per culturas association on medicinal plants, trees and working with natural materials. Dates are not included here; check the latest course dates before making plans.

The “Along the North Shore of Wohlensee” tour takes around two and a half hours. Its route alternates between largely undeveloped stretches of shore and sections through woodland. Both the approximate duration and the changes between lakeshore and woodland are therefore relevant when planning. As surface conditions can change, it is worth checking the trail conditions in advance.

The Frienisberg panoramic route offers a different planning consideration: it is a 41-kilometre circular tour starting and finishing in Hinterkappelen. The route descends to Wohlensee; at the lake, signs for cycle route 888, “Green Belt Bern,” provide information about the history of the hydroelectric power station. The north-shore tour is chiefly defined by its approximate duration, while the Frienisberg panoramic route is defined by its distance and circular course. This makes it possible to compare the two options using different details when planning a trip.

WohleibrĂĽcke, regional cuisine and history

WohleibrĂĽcke is an arched road bridge offering views over Wohlensee. A footpath of about 500 metres leads from the Kappelenring, West bus stop in Hinterkappelen to the bridge. If you plan to use this route, check the path in advance, as transport or lakeshore conditions may change. There is a small restaurant by the bridge serving regional dishes. Ingredients such as cheese, salad, vegetables and beef come from farms around Wohlensee; the menu may vary.

The history of the buildings can also be explored at several locations. The church in Wohlen was remodeled in 1677 and completely renovated in 1907. A church on Wohlensee features Romanesque building fabric and 14th-century frescoes. The historic group of buildings at HofenmĂĽhle is under national heritage protection. At Swiss Mill Day 2025, guided tours were offered explaining how grain was transported using a bucket elevator. If you plan to visit the mill, check the latest tour offerings.
