Discover Le Fuet in the Bernese Jura
Accommodation in Le Fuet
Le Fuet is a village in the Bernese Jura and belongs to the municipality of Saicourt. It lies at an elevation of about 841 m above sea level on the southern slope of Montbautier; the village has retained its agricultural character to this day. This makes it a rural destination with a clear connection to hiking trails and the Chapelle du Fuet. If you are planning a stay in the Bernese Jura, you can first consider whether you would prefer to focus on the landscape, the routes or the village’s architecture.
Hiking trails and routes around Le Fuet
A marked hiking trail leads up to the agriculturally oriented village of Le Fuet. The ViaJura follows a tree-lined avenue between two ranges of hills in the direction of the hamlet of Le Fuet. A ViaBerna stage turns right before Le Fuet and climbs gently through the forest to the summit of Montbautier. The Chemin des Trois-Lacs connects the Regio Basiliensis with French-speaking Switzerland. On the ViaJura, the trail passes behind a church, crosses a hilly pasture, crosses a perfectly straight canal and continues towards the Forêt de Chaindon.
The route descriptions differ mainly in their focus: ViaBerna highlights the gentle ascent through the forest and the summit of Montbautier, while the ViaJura combines a tree-lined avenue with sections across a pasture and alongside a canal. Bellelay, the starting point for this ViaBerna stage, can be reached by bus from the train stops in Reconvilier. Check the timetable before travelling.
Chapelle du Fuet and regional history
The Chapelle du Fuet was built by Charles Kleiber in 1938. It is made of limestone; its basic form is defined by a rectangular nave and a narrow choir with a flat apse. The simple masonry, lack of decoration and small bell tower give the building a character reminiscent of Romanesque chapels. For those interested in architecture, the chapel offers a tangible opportunity to consider its form, materials and understated design together.
The history of the village can be understood through two distinct connections. Archaeological remains of a Roman road were discovered between Saicourt and Le Fuet. In the Middle Ages, Le Fuet and the surrounding villages were within the sphere of influence of Bellelay Abbey. Thus, an archaeological trace of the Roman past and a medieval connection to the abbey stand side by side.
Location and orientation
Le Fuet lies on the road from Tavannes to Bellelay and is also connected to Reconvilier by road. Together with its location on the southern slope of Montbautier, this places the village within its landscape and regional road network. If you are planning an overnight stay in the Bernese Jura, the routes described here and the chapel can help you choose a destination.
