Gondiswil combines a distinctive landscape with hiking trails and traces of history. The municipality lies at around 660 metres above sea level, between gentle hills and dark forests. When planning your stay, you can focus on different things: observing nature at Gondiswilerweiher, following trails across meadows and through forests, or exploring the history of the mill.

Nature Reserve and Landscape

The Gondiswilerweiher nature reserve includes an idyllic little pond. Visitors can linger there and observe species that thrive in water. The pond was formed from a former coal mine, bringing a protected natural area and a history of past use together in one place. If you would like to consider the landscape not just as a backdrop but also in terms of how it came to be, the pond is a tangible point of reference.

The countryside around Gondiswil invites you to enjoy long walks. The “Idyllic Hike through the Swiss Plateau” starts in Gondiswil, crossing open meadows before continuing along an idyllic forest path. The change in landscape is part of the route: first open meadows, followed by the forest path. If this is the kind of change you are looking for, the route description makes it easy to see what to expect.

Hiking and Cycling

In Gondiswil, the Napfbergland Border Trail follows the Fribach stream to the Gondiswilerweiher nature reserve. From the pond to Gondiswil Mill, the trail follows the Wiesenbächlein stream. These provide two points of reference for finding your way: the Fribach stream on the way to the nature reserve and the Wiesenbächlein stream on the way to the mill. According to a municipal status update accessed on 26 August 2026, the hiking trail from the village via Zelg and Bärgli towards Haueten was open and safe to use; this status may change.

The signposted Heart Route also passes through Gondiswil. Check the signs and route before setting off. The Gondiswil Gymnastics Club organises an annual e-bike ride; dates and participation arrangements may vary from year to year. Check the information for the year you are interested in. The main difference between the Heart Route and the club event is their format: a signposted route on the one hand and an annually organised event on the other.

The former Gondiswil stop on the Wolhusen–Huttwil railway line has not been served since December 2009.

The Mill and Village Life

The machinery at Gondiswil Mill is intact, but has not been powered by water since 1908. The sandstone lintel bears the inscription of the Schär brothers: “Renovated in 1841.” The two dates have different meanings: 1841 marks the renovation recorded on the lintel, while 1908 marks the start of the period without water power. This distinction helps separate the inscription on the building from the mill’s later operating history.

Sunday services alternate between the church room in Gondiswil and the church in Melchnau. If you are planning to attend a service, check the current schedule.

When looking for a hotel in Gondiswil, you can first decide whether your stay will focus on nature by the pond, trails across meadows and through the forest, or the history of the mill.
