Lotzwil is located in the Bernese Oberaargau, in the Langete Valley, 504 metres above sea level and 2.5 kilometres south of Langenthal. Local points of interest include its architectural history, the museum and its collection on local industry, the Eco Trail and the Wässermatten cultural landscape. The traditional Fruit and Cider Day adds a recurring October event to these attractions. When planning your stay, both specific places to visit and a seasonal event are therefore relevant.

Location and getting there

Lotzwil lies on the Langenthal–Huttwil–Wolhusen–Lucerne railway line. If you are travelling by train, please check the current timetable. The Eco Trail starts at the municipal building, one minute from the station. This gives you a specific starting point for the trail close to the station. Lotzwil also has marked cycle paths, some of which are separated for bicycles and mopeds.

Church and architectural history

The present-day Lotzwil church was built in 1682–83 to plans by Abraham I Dünz. A tower stands north of the church; its core is probably medieval. The two dates refer to different building phases and offer insight into the town’s longer architectural history. The church is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00; confirm opening hours before your visit.

The Ingold-Hof farmhouse is at Huttwilstrasse 5. In the 2021 edition of the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National and Regional Significance, it is listed in Category A. This classification refers to the 2021 edition; check the current cultural property entry for any later status.

Eco Trail and museum

Eleven stations are marked along the Eco Trail, a comfortable one-hour route through the appealing surroundings of Lotzwil. The trail explores the relationship between people and the natural environment. It offers a different perspective from the church’s architectural history: here, stations explore a theme along the route. The one-hour duration helps you plan this activity.

The Lotzwil Museum is located in the municipal building and preserves historical objects from local industry. For current opening hours, email ovlg@lotzwilmuseum.ch. The museum also opens by appointment, so please arrange your visit in advance. The shared location makes it easy to find your way: the museum is in the municipal building, and the Eco Trail also starts there.

Wässermatten and Fruit and Cider Day

Part of the cultural landscapes known as Wässermatten in Lotzwil is included in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance as BLN site 1312. The name refers to a distinctive cultural landscape in the town; the inventory number uniquely identifies the entry.

The traditional Fruit and Cider Day is held on the second Saturday in October along Bahnhofstrasse and in the village square. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the arrangements for the relevant year. This allows you to take the recurring date into account without assuming that the event has already been confirmed for that year.
