Hersberg is a village on the eastern slope of Domberg in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, between Arisdorf and Liestal. It also lies on the watershed between the Ergolz, Violenbach and Talbächli. These details describe two different geographical features: the eastern slope locates Hersberg on Domberg, while the watershed lies between the named bodies of water. If you are looking for a hotel in Hersberg, you can plan your stay around local history, hiking or an e-bike route.

Location and village history

Hersberg was first mentioned in a document in 1226; in 1461, it came under the rule of the city of Basel. The two dates are 235 years apart and mark different stages in the village’s history. Olsbergerhof stands at the old village entrance. Its residential section dates from the 15th to 16th century; the farm is one of the few surviving late Gothic village farms. Hersberg’s coat of arms shows a Gothic stepped gable on a three-peaked mountain. The motif refers to the farm from which the small mountain village developed. Olsbergerhof thus combines a rarely preserved late Gothic architectural form with the history of the village’s development depicted in the coat of arms.

Hiking and choosing a route

The Hersberg–Liestal hiking experience covers 6.66 km and takes 120 minutes. It starts at the “Hersberg Schützen” stop on bus route 83. The Hersberg–Vogelsand–Arisdorf hike is 6.46 km long, takes about 95 minutes and ends at the schoolhouse in Arisdorf. Most of the route passes through open meadows and farmland. The routes are almost the same length: the Arisdorf route is only 0.20 km shorter, but its stated duration is about 25 minutes less. This difference is more relevant when comparing the time required than the small difference in distance. The starting points also have different names: the Hersberg–Liestal tour starts at the “Hersberg Schützen” stop, while the “On the Way to the Bear Family” stroller-friendly hike starts in Hersberg Dorf. Check the route conditions before setting out, and check the timetable for bus route 83 for the Liestal tour.

E-bike route and getting your bearings

After Windentaler Höhe, e-bike route 115, the “Baselbieter Reben Route,” passes through Hersberg and Nusshof. Signs along the route provide information about various grape varieties and winegrowing. The route therefore has a specific thematic focus as well as a defined course, which the information signs highlight along the way. The fifth stage of the Interregional Hiking Trail from Rheinfelden to Liestal also passes through Hersberg, making the village part of a stage between the two named endpoints.

For road directions, the Arisdorf motorway exit towards Basel is another geographical reference point: it is located within Hersberg. This means the road directions and the specific hiking trail starting points can be considered as different ways of finding your bearings.
