Arisdorf is a municipality in the Liestal district of the canton of Basel-Landschaft. Fields, meadows and village settlements lie in a landscape framed by wooded ridges; many cherry trees are also part of the local scenery. The municipality’s history dates back to its first mention in 1154. Historic buildings, trails with different focuses and the setting in the landscape offer several ways to get to know Arisdorf as a destination for a hotel stay.

Landscape and Location of Arisdorf

The municipality lies at an elevation of about 345 m above sea level. Its fields, meadows and settlements are framed by wooded ridges. In particular, at the end of March and beginning of April, the cherry trees along the Arisdörfer Chirsiweg take center stage with their white blossoms. This seasonal blossom provides a specific calendar reference for planning, while the cherry trees remain a defining feature of the landscape beyond this period.

The hamlet of Basel-Olsberg, also known as Ländli, is part of the municipality. Ländli, located on the Violen stream, belongs to Arisdorf, even though its settlement pattern resembles that of the neighboring Aargau municipality of Olsberg. Another landmark is Bechhof: it lies east of the village on the hillside, on a scenic rise above the church and village. The municipality’s location and these individual points of reference paint a picture that encompasses both the landscape and Ländli’s distinctive boundaries.

Village History and Historic Buildings

Arisdorf was first mentioned in 1154. Its history is connected with the Frohburg, Thierstein and Bärenfels families, with Basel, and with the Basel Revolution of 1798. The Evangelical Reformed church was built by the city of Basel in 1595 to replace a dilapidated chapel. The rectory at Hauptstrasse 66/66B also tells of the connection with the city: Basel Cathedral Chapter purchased it in 1596 and converted it into a rectory. The building acquired its present appearance in 1684.

At the entrance to the village stands the former mill, which forms a small group of buildings together with the surrounding agricultural outbuildings. The mill was already described as long-established in the 16th century. Another historic feature is the Heuschürli. Its large ventilation openings point to the early 19th century; it is also one of the canton’s most interesting examples of this type of small building. The buildings thus differ both in function and in the periods to which they date.

Story Trail and Cherry Trails

The Arisdorf Story Trail passes eight stops. There, you can immerse yourself in stories by primary school pupils and discover creatively designed stations. The trail is stroller-friendly. The Arisdörfer Chirsiweg, also known as the Cherry Trail, focuses instead on the cherry trees and their blossom. It is a stroller-friendly circular walk in and around “Aschdef,” as Arisdorf is known.

The two trails offer different experiences: the Story Trail is divided into eight stops, while the seasonal cherry blossom is a particularly useful point of reference for timing a visit to the Chirsiweg. Another option is the Hersberg–Arisdorf hiking route. It ends after 5.4 kilometers at the “Arisdorf, Olsbergerstrasse” stop and is specially suited to families with strollers. When planning, you can therefore choose between a trail with several story stations, a circular walk connected with the cherry blossom, and a hiking route with a stated distance and endpoint.

Local Highlights and Practical Information

After returning to the village from the Arisdörfer Chirsiweg, a visit to the Ernst Zuber AG specialty distillery is recommended. The distillery processes its distilling fruit directly in its own fermentation tanks. The Vogelsand fire pit has a barbecue shelter, an outdoor grill and a view of Arisdorf. These offer different ways to enjoy a stay: a seasonal trail, the processing of distilling fruit, and a named spot with barbecue facilities and a view.

Arisdorf is located near the Arisdorf exit on the A2 motorway and the Arisdorf Tunnel. AAGL bus route 83 connects the village with Liestal as well as Augst and Pratteln. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for your intended travel date. When choosing a destination for a hotel stay, you can match Arisdorf to your interests, whether historic village architecture, the cherry blossom or the different trails and their respective focuses.
