Bubendorf: Oak Grove, Castle and Culture
Accommodation in Bubendorf
Bubendorf is a municipality in the district of Liestal in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. The defining features of the area include the Wildenstein nature reserve, Wildenstein Castle and local cultural heritage. The landscape, architecture and collections offer different ways to shape a stay.
Wildenstein: Plateau, Oaks and Biodiversity
The Wildenstein nature reserve lies on a plateau in the Tafeljura range above Bubendorf, at around 500 metres above sea level. The area around Wildenstein Castle was protected by the canton of Basel-Landschaft in 1997 because of its great historical and ecological significance. The old oak trees provide a special habitat: more than 1,000 animal and plant species live in them. More than 140 lichen species have also been discovered on the oaks, making Wildenstein one of Switzerland’s most significant lichen sites. The Lesser Butterfly-orchid, an orchid species, grows in the Baselbiet Tafeljura only at this site.
On guided tours of the oak grove, rangers provide an overview ranging from the landscape as a whole to the distinctive features of individual trees. On tours in Wildenstein, they also explain how to identify several native woodpecker species that regularly breed there. If you are planning a tour, check availability before your trip. The Sormattfall, a waterfall with tufa formations, lies below Wildenstein Castle; water levels vary by season.
Wildenstein Castle and Paths Around the Estate
Wildenstein Castle consists of a residential and defensive tower. Its history spans a medieval clearing castle and noble residence tower through to a castle and Basel country estate. The interior can be visited on public tours held on the first Sunday of each summer month. The castle is not open to the public on other days. An information trail around Wildenstein Castle, accessible at all times, offers insights into the past. Along the circular route, a fairy-tale box tells the story of the legendary Kunigunde.
For a hike, the Bubendorf–Murenberg–Wildenstein–Bubendorf loop offers specific details to help plan your time and route: it is 7.1 kilometres long, with a walking time of just over two hours. It also involves 270 metres of ascent and 252 metres of descent. The hike starts at the Bubendorf, Zentrum stop and ends at Bubendorf, Steingasse. Both stops are served by bus routes 70 and 71; Bubendorf, Zentrum can be reached from Liestal.
The nature reserve can be reached on BLT bus route 70 from Basel Aeschenplatz or Liestal railway station. From the Bubendorf, Steingasse stop, a signposted footpath takes around 30 minutes to reach the plateau. Check the bus connection before travelling. If you are cycling, you can include the Wildenstein cycle route in your plans: it passes through Bubendorf and then climbs briefly to Murenberg.
Museum and Architectural Heritage in Bubendorf
The Bubendorf Nativity Scene and Toy Museum displays nativity scenes and figures from around the world dating from the mid-17th century onwards. The collection also includes children’s books and toys from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries from the German-speaking world. Local history and customs round out the exhibits; the programme is expanded by changing annual exhibitions, including shows by local artists. The museum is classified as “of regional significance” under cultural property protection. As exhibitions change, it is worth checking the current programme before visiting.
The history of the area’s architecture can also be read in its various buildings. The former Dinghof of the provost’s estate at Hauptstrasse 52 is a three-storey house with Gothic triple windows, a gabled roof and stepped gables; the adjoining barn dates from 1600. Bubendorf Parish Church has old stained-glass heraldic panels. The parish hall features a coffered ceiling with painted wooden panels dating from around 1700. Gutenfels Castle Ruins are known as the little sister of Wildenstein Castle.
Bubendorf thus offers a protected oak grove with documented biodiversity, a castle with clearly defined opportunities to visit its interior, and a collection of objects spanning several centuries as distinct themes for a visit.
