Roggwil offers a variety of things to explore during a stay: architectural history at the Reformed Church, Iron Age traces in the Fryburg area, art, leisure activities and a circular hike.

Churches and History

Construction of the Reformed Church in Roggwil began in 1665. Dating from the same year are the coat-of-arms pyramid above the south entrance, a sculpture by Abraham I Dünz, as well as the decorative grisaille paintings and the wooden pulpit inside. The current tower on the north side was built in 1776. The Baroque preaching hall lies beneath a steep gable roof, which is hipped above the polygonal end. The church thus brings together details from different construction periods. Its doors have been open to visitors for more than 350 years.

The Bruder Klaus Church Centre is Roggwil’s Roman Catholic parish church. It was built in 1973 on Bahnhofstrasse 73 as a subsidiary church of the mother parish church of Maria Königin in Langenthal. Together with the Reformed Church, it represents two different church traditions in the town.

A much earlier history leads to the Fryburg area at the confluence of the Langete and the Rot. A larger Iron Age settlement existed there from approximately 80 to 50 BC. The Celtic town was fortified with ramparts and ditches, covered around 23 hectares and was densely built up inside. Surveys of the oppidum uncovered, among other things, 250 Celtic coins and 100 non-ferrous metal objects. These finds offer a tangible insight into settlement in the area during the Iron Age.

The Bromer Art Collection in Roggwil focuses on Classical Modernism and contemporary art. The cultural offering thus ranges from archaeological themes to art from more recent periods.

Leisure Activities in Roggwil

Belli's Mini Leisure Park welcomes families and is set amid nature. Children can let off steam while adults relax over coffee, wine and food. The offering combines activities for children with a place to spend some time.

Klosterkilbi and Circular Hike

Today, the St. Urban–Roggwil Klosterkilbi extends from St. Urban in the Lucerne municipality of Pfaffnau to Roggwil in the canton of Bern. During the three-day Klosterkilbi, clubs from both municipalities provide entertainment into the early hours; the programme may vary. Around 200 market vendors set up their stalls for the Sunday market, which is then visited by thousands of people. These numbers may vary from year to year. If you are planning to attend the Klosterkilbi, check the event dates for your travel period.

The St. Urban–Roggwil circular hike can also be cycled. The marked hiking trail descends from St. Urban towards Roggwil and Murgenthal. Along the way, the route briefly passes through the Rebberg-Trottenhubel nature forest reserve and offers views over Roggwil and towards the Jura. The tour thus combines a directional route with a short stretch alongside the nature forest reserve and views of the wider landscape.

For travel to the circular hike, the route description lists trains every half hour from Langenthal to Roggwil and St. Urban, as well as buses from the Rottal and from Pfaffnau to St. Urban. Check the current timetable before setting out.
