Landscape and orientation

Leimbach lies in a niche in the northern terminal moraine in the Wynental. At the edge of the Wyna, the village stretches across gentle hills, fields and forests; its character is quiet and rural. The natural surroundings invite you to go for walks and bike rides. Leimbach has good public transport connections and is close to Reinach, Menziken and Aarau.

Trails by duration and interest

The stroller-friendly Wilma Trail is about 1.2 kilometres long, takes around 20 minutes and includes three varied stops. Its suitability for strollers distinguishes it from the Wili Trail.

The Wili Trail is suitable for children from around kindergarten age and is not stroller-friendly. At about 4.6 kilometres long and taking around two hours, it is the longer of the two trails. It has eleven varied stops and several fire pits. When choosing between them, both the time required and the suitability and number of stops are factors to consider.

The Hombergwichtel Trail runs through the municipalities of Reinach and Leimbach. It offers visitors of all ages a nature experience with playful stops, little surprises and lovely views. It officially opened on 23 May 2026.

The Bänkliwanderung Leimbach starts at Leimbach railway station. It is about 4.1 kilometres long, with around 220 metres of ascent and descent, and takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. It is rated easy for both technical difficulty and fitness level. In terms of duration, it falls between the shorter Wilma Trail and the Wili Trail, which takes around two hours.

The natural surroundings also offer opportunities for bike rides. The “Auf den Homberg” mountain bike route passes by the thatch-roof house on the descent.

Thatched-Roof House and Local History

The thatch-roof house, also known as the Strohhaus and the Aargauerhaus, stands on the Seeberg above Leimbach. It is the oldest type of house known in Aargau. The year 1783 is inscribed on the beam above the barn door. The house has been converted into a small museum; old tools such as the Aargau plough, wooden harrows and household utensils illustrate the village’s former way of life.

The place name Leimbach is already recorded in its present spelling in the Habsburg Urbar of 1300. It derives from the Old High German “Leimbah” and means “clay stream”. The village’s economic history includes cotton and tobacco processing as cottage industries in the 18th and 19th centuries. From the 1920s onwards, there was also a sheet metal and wire factory. The history of the name, the former cottage industries and the later factory each offer a different insight into the village’s development.
