Gontenschwil lies in the upper Wynental and borders the canton of Lucerne. Different aspects of the village are worth considering when planning your trip: a landscape shaped by glaciers, natural areas along the Wyna, and cultural and economic history. The village museum, gallery and outdoor activities offer a range of themes to explore during your stay.

Landscape and Nature along the Wyna

Gontenschwil’s landscape was shaped during the Würm glaciation around 15,000 years ago by the Reuss Glacier, which advanced as far as this area. Two lateral moraines and a prominent terminal moraine running across the valley are traces of this development. According to the cantonal structure plan, the Wyna, the Moos and the adjacent hills are landscapes of cantonal importance. Lateral moraines lie along the glacier’s flanks, while the terminal moraine marks its former front; the two landforms can therefore be clearly distinguished from one another in the valley.

The Wyna and its hedge-lined banks are now an important nature reserve. Near the Wyna bend and the terminal moraine, there are restored areas with ponds, pools, flood channels, extensively managed meadows and ruderal areas. These habitats provide refuges for amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish and insects. With a little luck, you may spot kingfishers, marsh warblers and active beavers along the Wyna.

Culture and History

The Gontenschwil Village Museum is housed in a former rectory dating from 1592. Group visits can be arranged by phone on 062 773 17 48; advance arrangements are required. The Schlössli Gallery has been open since 1985 and has hosted more than 150 exhibitions. The disused Lochmühle mill in the Hinterdorf is considered the birthplace of the aluminium industry in the region.

Gontenschwil’s history is linked to the Counts of Lenzburg, the Counts of Kyburg, the Habsburgs and the Bernese Aargau. In the 18th and 19th centuries, cotton processing shaped the local economy. After the collapse of the textile industry, almost 30 percent of the population left by 1900, many of them for overseas.

Another historical trace leads to Bad Schwarzenberg. A mineral spring and healing spring was discovered there in 1640. Many patients subsequently came to the spa seeking relief from their ailments; mineral water was bottled there until 1990.
