Schinznach-Bad: Thermal Baths and Bathing Tradition
Accommodation in Schinznach-Bad
Schinznach-Bad is a village in Switzerland, in the canton of Aargau and the district of Brugg. Since the merger on January 1, 2020, it has been part of the city of Brugg. With a sulfur-rich thermal spring and a bathing tradition spanning centuries, the village is closely associated with bathing. At the same time, its buildings and trails tell different stories about its history and landscape.
Thermal Baths and Sauna
At Aquarena Fun, a thermal-water pool connects the indoor and outdoor pools, so you can move between them without leaving the water. There is also a 25-metre swimming pool and a 65-metre grotto slide. Wheelchair-accessible changing rooms and showers are among the facilities at Aquarena Fun. Check the current access conditions before your visit.
Thermi Spa offers a different experience: the Orient Cocon features heated stone loungers. The thermal-water pool has bubble loungers, massage jets and a whirlpool. Aquarena Sauna includes three saunas, two steam rooms, a graduation tower and various relaxation areas. The panoramic sauna and the infinity-edge cold-water pool offer views of the parkland.
Bathing Tradition and History
The history of the Schinznach spring goes back a long way: it was rediscovered in 1691 on the right bank of the Aare near Birrenlauf. Numerous buildings for the spa business were subsequently constructed. The spa in Schinznach-Bad was also the founding place of the Helvetic Society in 1761. These historic milestones give the bathing tradition a distinct historical context.
Construction of the round building at Bad Schinznach began in 1824, and it opened in 1828. It has been regarded as a landmark of Bad Schinznach ever since. Historic spa architecture includes buildings in the Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Visitors interested in the development of the spa town can explore its architectural history alongside the thermal baths.
Parkland, Circular Trail and Golf
Bad Schinznach is set in picturesque parkland on the banks of the Aare. The Aargau Geo Trail, an eleven-kilometre circular hiking trail, passes through Schinznach-Bad. Its 23 signposted information stations cover geology, ecology and the history of the region. The trail offers a chance to explore the landscape through these different themes. Check trail conditions before setting out on a hike.
Another way to get active is to play Pitch & Putt in the park at Bad Schinznach. The challenging short course has nine holes, with bunkers, water hazards, a pond with water lilies and streams incorporated into the course. You can play without a course proficiency certificate or handicap. As access is seasonal, it is advisable to check the conditions before visiting.
