Remigen is a rural municipality in the canton of Aargau and a wine-growing village on the Geissberg. Viticulture, paths through vineyards and forests, and historic sites give a stay a variety of focuses. If you are looking for a hotel in Remigen, you can first decide whether Roman wine culture, hiking trails, or the landscape interests you most. The Roman vineyard, the routes, and the local history offer specific points of reference.

Roman Wine Culture and Remigen’s Vineyards

Remigen is one of four municipalities in the Brugg district that, as satellite sites of the Vindonissa Museum, showcase the history of how the Romans introduced and cultivated wine 2,000 years ago. The Roman vineyard in Remigen introduces visitors to Roman wine culture and, as a museum vineyard, also covers the dilution of wine. A pergola-like growing method can also be seen there; it was used in dry regions and is still practised today, for example in Italy.

Tours of the Roman vineyard, tastings of Roman wine, and cellar tours can be booked through Hartmann Winery. The winery regularly organises vineyard walks among Remigen’s vines, including historical tours for visitors. If one of these activities is important to your trip, check the dates with the winery in advance. The Roman vineyard is freely accessible year-round; check for current information before your visit.

Paths Through Vineyards, Fields, and Forest

The Vineyard and Nature Hiking Trail in Remigen is a themed trail that explains the flora and fauna of vineyards, forests, and fields. The forest route is 6.71 kilometres long. The longer forest route also includes the central area of the Schwändi-Bützberg oak forest reserve.

The Steinbockweg Remigen is a 5.2-kilometre circular route that leads to cultural treasures, intriguing places, and historic properties. The Zehntenhaus is one of the trail’s stops, at the Winterhalde/Zehntenhaus site. The two trail lengths provide a clear comparison of distance, while their themes offer different highlights: the Vineyard and Nature Hiking Trail focuses on flora, fauna, and habitats, while the Steinbockweg features cultural and historic sites.

Landscape and Nature on the Geissberg

Remigen lies in gently rolling countryside among vineyards, fields, and extensive forest areas. The landscape offers opportunities for walks, hikes, and nature experiences. The Rütifels in Remigen, on the Geissberg, is a rocky slope with boulder scree on the Geissberg’s warm, dry southern slopes. The very rare Jura viper is found there. Thus, alongside vineyards and forests, the distinctive rock formations and boulder scree at the Rütifels are also among Remigen’s natural features.

Church and Zehntenhaus

Remigen Church probably began as a small chapel in the 11th or 12th century. On the east gable of the church tower is an ornately designed golden clock with just one hour hand. This tentative dating and distinctive feature offer two different historical points of interest. The Zehntenhaus is also part of the local history: it is protected as a cantonal heritage monument and is also a stop on the Steinbockweg.
