Discover Zufikon: Flachsee and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Zufikon
Zufikon is in the Swiss canton of Aargau, in the district of Bremgarten, immediately east of the district capital, Bremgarten, in the Reuss Valley. When choosing where to stay, it helps to ask one simple question: would you like to explore the natural landscape around Flachsee, take time to visit the chapels and church buildings, or plan a section of the Habsburg Way? These themes offer different focuses; they do not need to be combined into a single walk. Highlights include a nature reserve of national importance and several culturally significant sites protected at cantonal level.
Flachsee and its habitats
The Flachsee reserve stretches across the dammed section of the Reuss between the Rottenschwil bridge and Bremgarten-Zufikon. It covers about 140 hectares. The natural landscape includes more than open water: mudflats and shallow-water areas, slow-flowing water, natural banks with reed beds, adjacent marsh meadows and alluvial forests, as well as gravel islands, provide habitats for a variety of waterbirds. For nature and bird enthusiasts, the variety of habitats is a defining feature of the area.
The official Flachsee offering includes public outreach, such as excursions and observation facilities. If you are planning your visit around a particular excursion or facility, check the latest information in advance; programmes and facilities may change.
Emaus Chapel and other buildings
Emaus Chapel stands near Zufikon’s lower municipal boundary, close to the forest above the banks of the Reuss. It is classified as a cultural property of regional importance and is fully protected at cantonal level. The chapel has a historical connection to pilgrimage; in 1516, a papal decree granted it special privileges as a pilgrimage site.
Its art history can also be dated precisely: cycles of oil paintings on fir wood date from 1676/77. These include a series of paintings depicting the life of Saint Anthony the Hermit. The parish church of St. Martin in Zufikon is also classified as a cultural property of regional importance and is fully protected at cantonal level. It was built between 1865 and 1868.
Another historic site is St. Nicholas Chapel near BrĂĽgglihau/Dominiloch. The foundations of the chapel, built in 1584, were uncovered and preserved in 1953. The history of the Reuss is also part of the local historical background: as late as the 17th century, a ferry crossed the river in this area.
Stage and travel
The Habsburg Way stage from Bremgarten to Muri follows the Reuss riverside path to Emaus Chapel in Zufikon, where it crosses the Reuss. Bremgarten station and Muri AG station are listed as rail stations for travelling to and from this stage. Check the current route and train connections before planning your trip.
For road travel, the layout of the main routes provides a useful guide: Highway 1 runs north of Zufikon via Mutschellen. At a roundabout, cantonal road 263 branches off towards Birmensdorf, where it connects to the A4.
Excursions in the wider Freiamt region
If you are planning to explore beyond Zufikon, the wider Freiamt region provides a broader regional setting. A nature and cultural heritage trail there runs for more than 117 kilometres through natural landscapes and past cultural landmarks. Hiking, mountain biking, cycling and road cycling tours are also available in the area. This regional selection differs from the specific focus on Flachsee and the buildings in and around Zufikon: it offers a wider setting for exploring nature and culture.
