Discover Berikon: Cultural Trail, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Berikon
Explore Berikon through its historic buildings, the Berikon Cultural Trail and outdoor attractions. Its themes range from the architectural history of individual houses to a geopark and a recreational facility. If you are considering Berikon as a destination for a hotel stay, these different highlights offer concrete points to help you choose where to go.
The Berikon Cultural Trail and its stops
The Berikon Cultural Trail gives visitors access to Berikon’s historic buildings, fountains and wayside crosses. Each site has an information board and a QR code linking to a detailed description. Stops include the Hunting Museum at Schulstrasse 11, the artillery bunker at Marrengasse and the Berikon-West artillery emplacement in the Näsple (Gunzenbühl) forest. The boards and QR codes offer two ways to find out more: information at the site itself and a more detailed description to access online.
Houses, craftsmanship and remembrance
The half-timbered house was built in 1794 in the style of Zurich wine-growing houses. From 1809 to 1819, it housed the village’s first tavern. Its construction and historic use therefore represent different chapters in the house’s history. Another testament to local remembrance is the plague cross: made of shell limestone in 1628, it commemorates the great plague epidemic. Its sculpted details include angels’ heads and depictions of the sun and moon, a flowering branch, a vine and rosettes.
The Bürgisserhus was already standing in the 18th century and served two families as both a home and a place of business. One half housed Berikon’s first forge. The house was inaugurated in August 2005 with a festival celebrating great cultural diversity. The details about the half-timbered house, the plague cross and the Bürgisserhus show different aspects of local history: construction and former use, remembrance, and the combination of home and business.
Cultural activities
The cultural group plans an annual programme of cultural events featuring the spoken word, visual arts and music. Specific event dates are therefore not set out here. The theatre also has its own history: Berikon’s theatre group was formed in 2003 as part of the 850 Johr Berike festival, with an open-air theatre performance. There is evidence of settlement in Berikon during the Neolithic period; by the middle of the 12th century, the place is documented several times under the names Percheim and Bercheim.
Leisure and geology
The Riedacher leisure facility (FRIEDA) includes a large playground with swings, slides and climbing frames. It also has barbecue areas for outdoor meals, as well as facilities for playing football and volleyball. Facilities may change; check the current details before your visit.
Berikon Geopark is located at a viewpoint above the village and displays granite, limestone, gneiss and sandstone pillars as evidence of the Earth’s history. The old village fountain is another distinctive feature of the local landscape: made of shell limestone, it dates from 1851 and stands right beside a hiking trail. For further wayfinding while hiking, the eastern route complements the six stages of the Freiämter Nature and Culture Hiking Trail.
Location and travel information
Berikon lies just south of the Mutschellen Pass summit, on the border with the Canton of Zurich. The Berikon, Kirche stop is served by bus route 50.350 between Berikon-Widen and Zurich Wiedikon. If you plan to use this bus connection, check the timetable for your visit.
The Rummelbach also provides a geographical reference point: it rises in Oberberikon and, after three kilometres, flows into the Reppisch in the municipality of Dietikon. The known names help place the village’s history in context: by the middle of the 12th century, Berikon appears several times as Percheim and Bercheim, while evidence of settlement during the Neolithic period relates to an earlier and less precisely defined time.
