Suhr lies in the lower Suhr Valley and is part of the agglomeration of Aarau, the cantonal capital. If you are looking for a hotel in Suhr, the museum, late Gothic church, art trail and viewpoint can help you get a sense of what your stay has to offer. History and art sit alongside marked trails, scenic views and the outdoor swimming pool.

Cultural history at the museum and church

The Suhr Museum presents a permanent exhibition on four floors covering the historical and cultural development of Suhr. It also displays fragments of the early medieval chancel screen from Suhr’s church. These fragments are among the most valuable relics of Suhr’s church history and are of international significance. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current access arrangements in advance.

Another historical landmark is the Untervogthaus: Sebastian Gysi built it in 1600; it is the most important Gothic-style town house in Suhr. During the Swiss Peasants’ War of 1653, it served as a meeting place for the rebels. The present-day late Gothic Reformed Church of Suhr was consecrated in 1495. Archaeological finds from 1956 show that Suhr has one of the oldest churches in the Canton of Aargau.

The choir windows by Aarau artist Felix Hoffmann shape the church interior. Their themes are the Passion, Resurrection and Mission. The Reformed Church is open to visitors on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The church is about a 15-minute walk from Suhr railway station. Check opening hours and bear in mind that walking conditions may change.

Art trails and hiking routes

The Felix Hoffmann Trail connects six marked churches within walking distance of one another. It features a total of 23 stained-glass works by Aargau artist Felix Hoffmann; Suhr Church is one of the stops. The Aarau–Suhr section is listed as approximately 4.5 kilometres, around 120 metres of elevation gain and about one hour and ten minutes of walking. These approximate figures can help you plan the walking time for this section.

The Huguenot Trail runs from Aarau via Suhr and Schafisheim to Lenzburg and Brugg. Its route and signage may change. When choosing a route, the Aarau–Suhr section of the Felix Hoffmann Trail offers specific guidance on distance, elevation gain and walking time; the Huguenot Trail can be understood as a longer connection through several municipalities based on the places mentioned along it.

Views and time outdoors

Suhrerchopf is a viewpoint above the Reformed Church of Suhr. From there, you can see across Suhr and the surrounding area, as well as the Wynen and Suhr valleys. The viewpoint is accessible on foot from the village of Suhr, Aarauerfeld or Unterentfelden. Local trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

The barbecue area at Suhrerchopf can be used year-round. As conditions on site may change, it is advisable to confirm its status before your visit. Another way to spend time outdoors is at the Suhr-Buchs-Gränichen outdoor swimming pool. The municipalities of Suhr, Buchs and Gränichen operate it jointly at the confluence of the Suhre and Wyne rivers. As it is a seasonal outdoor pool, check visiting hours for your planned stay.

Transport and industrial history

Suhr’s transport history can also be traced through specific dates. The Zofingen–Wettingen railway line opened on 6 September 1877. The Wynental Railway began operating as an electric tramway on 5 March 1904. The two dates mark distinct milestones in the local history of transport.

In the 19th century, Suhr developed into an important industrial centre. Textile factories were the main businesses established initially. Towards the end of the century, they were replaced by metalworking and mechanical engineering companies, some of which remain in operation in part to this day. Together with the historic buildings and church history, this offers another perspective on the development of the town.
