Oberentfelden: Forest Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Oberentfelden
Oberentfelden is a municipality in Switzerland, in the canton of Aargau and the district of Aarau. It lies in the lower Suhrental and borders the canton of Solothurn. From the wooded ridge known as «Berg» to the east, the municipal area extends across the fertile plain of the lower Suhrental to the wooded rise known as «Tann» to the west. The wooded courses of the Suhre and Uerke rivers, as well as several biotopes, also shape the landscape.
Forest Trails and Outdoor Activities
The Entfelden Forest Discovery Trail combines a conventional forest nature trail with a discovery trail. It is about 2.5 kilometres long, follows forest paths and is marked as a circular route. You can choose which direction to walk in. The route combines a forest experience with a clearly defined circuit.
There are paths along the Suhre and Uerke rivers for walks, jogging and cycling. Unlike the marked circuit, these routes focus on the river courses and the different ways the paths are used. The Zurich vitaparcours Ober-/Unterentfelden starts at the Entfelden indoor swimming pool.
Museums and Local History
The Oberentfelden Industrial Museum presents special exhibitions on local history and industrial businesses. The museum also houses collections from Walther BĂĽrsten AG. Museum opening hours are available on request.
The Alte Schmitte is dedicated to the history of the historic building and the blacksmithing trade. Guided tours can be combined with a demonstration in the on-site smithy; please arrange this in advance. The Oberentfelden Blacksmiths’ Association offers blacksmithing demonstrations for schools and groups by arrangement. The association also offers blacksmithing courses for beginners. Check which courses are available before your trip.
The Oberentfelden Leisure Workshop offers courses for adults and young people, including cooking and baking courses. The course programme varies by season and may change. Local history reaches far back: a significant Roman estate with a manor house was built in Oberentfelden and remained inhabited until the 4th century. In the medieval and early modern periods, the monasteries of Disentis, Königsfelden and Beromünster, the Hallwyler family and the city of Bern all played a role. In the second half of the 18th century, Oberentfelden was a centre of cotton processing.
Oberentfelden Church was completed in July 1866 and is a protected historic monument. Another way to explore an educational topic is the Aarau-Kölliken Planet Trail. It runs through the forests of Aarau, Unterentfelden, Oberentfelden and Kölliken. Over just under 6 kilometres, the educational trail uses a scale of 1:1 billion to illustrate the distances from the sun and the sizes of the sun, the nine planets and Earth’s moon.
More Leisure Activities and Getting There
Depending on the day of the week and visitor numbers, Entfelden’s outdoor and indoor swimming pool has two separate sauna areas; opening arrangements may vary. Check the details before visiting. At Golf Entfelden, the second nine holes are on the original course among stands of mature trees; the fairways are short and narrow.
Oberentfelden is connected by the A1 motorway and Suhrentalstrasse. Rail connections include an SBB railway station and services operated by Aargau Verkehr AG’s Wynental and Suhrental Railway.
